Principal's Corner
Lakeview Families,
More than five hundred students attend Lakeview Elementary. Our students speak more than twenty languages at home. Many of our students were born outside of the United States. Some are still learning English. We have students who come from all over the world with skin of all different shades. We have some students who are significantly impacted by disabilities. We have many students who face issues of poverty. We are an incredibly diverse school representing a beautiful array of cultures, diversity, and backgrounds.
This morning we held an assembly where this student body sang songs of freedom and diversity. I can't conceive of many things more touching than our 500 children from all walks of life singing their hearts out in honor of a man who fought for equality.
Even more beautiful is watching the way they interact and treat each other on a day to day basis. Maybe it's their youth or maybe it's just a hallmark of a new generation but these students interact with each other in a way that says they appreciate and understand each other's differences, but, in the end, they are all just kids wanting to play together at recess.
No classes will be held on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Day. Please take some time with your students to remind them of the importance of this day and the message taught by Dr. King.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Rebekah Westra
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
-Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
