Principal's Corner
Lakeview Families,
Today I observed a first grade writing lesson. The students had brainstormed all of the things they were thankful for. Reading their lists was so fun! They are grateful for a whole variety of things: ice cream, dolphins, skateboards, Legos, Russell Wilson, fish, cars, and birthdays. The common thing, though, on every first grader's list was he or she was grateful for family and friends.
This Thanksgiving I am grateful for a lot of things (certainly ice cream and, come to think of it, dolphins!) but I am especially grateful to work with your children. They are wonderfully positive, hardworking, kind, and curious kiddos. They put the important things in life in perspective every single day.
Thanks for sending us such great students every day and thanks for being the people in their lives that they are all grateful for.
Have a great weekend!

Winter Wishes-Help Our Lakeview Community
Winter Wishes, a Lakeview tradition, allows the community to show they care by helping families share in the joy of gift giving and receiving during the holiday season. Marcee Ben-Menachem, our school counselor, confidentially facilitates gathering the wishes from our Winter Wishes families and delivering the gifts to them. Lakeview students, with their parents then select one or more of these and fulfill them for these families.
Beginning on Monday 11/24 through 12/5, gift tags will be available for pick up both before and after school in the front office.
If you are unable to come with your child, you may fill out the form in kid mail 11/26, giving them permission to select an item or you can look at items online at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0948ABAC2BAB9-winter2 which you can link to through the Lakeview website homepage.
Bring all items unwrapped to school office on or before 12/12. (They are donated to a local charity after this date). We will also have a collection area at the Lakeview Multi-cultural night. Please return all gifts with their original Winter Wishes tag attached with the family number and gift number. Thank you for your generosity!

Drop-In Counseling Group
A message from Counselor Marcee Ben-Menachem
Dear Parents,
As the Counselor, 90% of the issues I address are typical age appropriate problems that need support from an experienced adult. It is an honor to have the privilege of helping your children navigate the complex social and emotional world we live in. My job is to help nurture your child in developing their interdisciplinary skills at school so that your children can be future ready and prepared to learn. I've worked hard to create a Counseling program that allows students to visit me freely without stigma that something is "wrong" with them. It is equally important to me that we are always looking for new ways to be proactive with social and emotional development in elementary school. One way that I do this is by providing classroom guidance lessons. During these lessons your children will learn about:
-
Self-awareness and awareness of others (empathy),
-
Self-management
-
How to be a good friend, classmate, and acquaintance
-
How to be part of a group,
-
Solving small problems on their own,
-
Recognizing the difference between bullying and conflict,
-
Learning how to stand up to a bully when it's safe,
-
Knowing when to report bullying incidents or when to ask for help with a conflict
Another way I provide social and emotional support for our students is by offering small group instruction related to one or more of the topics above. Some children learn these skills better in a smaller group setting. These groups are fun for students and are an excellent way to support our children in doing their best in school.
In order to provide access to the group experience for all students, I will be piloting an informal drop-in group program for 2nd and 3rd graders. It will take place during their lunch recess on Thursdays, starting December 4th. Each week, I will have a fun activity or game planned that enables them to further develop one or more of the skills above. The groups give them a chance to develop new friendships in a smaller, more structured setting than recess. As the year progresses I plan to make this group available to all students!
Participation is voluntary. If a student wants to take part, they may ask their teacher to sign them up that week. Students can also be referred to the group by their teacher or parent. Because this is an informal program, parent permission is not required.
Sincerely,
Marcee Ben-Menachem, M.Ed., NBCT, School Counselor
