Principal's Corner
Lakeview Families,
Many of you have heard that our state testing this year will look a little different. I wanted to give you some information about that.
As you know, Washington has state learning standards across a wide variety of subjects. The state administers tests every year in English language arts (ELA), math and science to make sure students' learning is on track--for state and federal accountability requirements. Because Washington's state learning standards in ELA and math now align with the Common Core State Standards, the tests students take this year in those subjects will be different. These new Smarter Balanced tests are next-generation assessments that accurately measure student progress toward college- and career-readiness by the end of high school. Students will take these tests online.
The state will no longer administer the MSP in math and reading. Instead, students will take what is called the Smarter Balance Assessment (SBA) in English/Language Arts (ELA) and Math. The science MSP, however, will still be administered in fifth grade.
Please let me know if you have questions. For more information visit the PTSA website at http://www.lakeviewptsa.org.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Spotlight on Lakeview! 3rd Grade Team
There are five teachers on the 3rd Grade Team. Mrs. Jaime Tiffany, Mrs. Keri Levinson, Mrs. Stephanie Llanes, Ms. Melissa Douma, and Mr. Luke Johnson.
From Melissa Douma: I love spending time with my family- going on walks, playing games, and just having fun. I like to watch and play sports. I also like to do crafts, make cards, and find DIY projects to do around my house.
From Jaime Tiffany: In my free time I love to bake, especially yummy treats. The best time to bake is on a rainy Sunday with the Seahawks playing on the TV in the background. I also love to make cards with stamps with my youngest daughter. When I was younger, basketball was my favorite sport to watch and play. Nowadays, I love to watch and learn about volleyball because my oldest daughter plays this sport.
From Keri Levinson: Outside of school I love to spend time with my family! We like to camp, go out to fun restaurants, and sometimes go hiking. Another one of my most favorite things is THE SEAHAWKS!!! There is little I enjoy more than going to a game or having friends over to watch at home. Something that has been very enjoyable to me the last year is returning to Grad school. I have always tried to instill in my students a love of learning that lasts a lifetime. My teachers did that for me and I truly do love school and the whole learning process, but I will look forward to June when I graduate and having more time to do the other things that I love!
From Stephanie Llanes:I love to spend time with my husband, Ben, and our two girls, Kate (4 years) and Kinsley (18 months). We love getting outdoors to hike and camp, but when the weather is rainy we cuddle up to read books, watch movies (with popcorn of course), and have dance parties. I LOVE coffee!
From Luke Johnson:I have taught in the Lake Washington School District for 36 years. This is my tenth year at Lakeview. My wife and I live in downtown Kirkland and enjoy seeing all the Lakeview students and parents around town. We enjoy traveling, theater, restaurants, ballet and the symphony. I am very health and fitness oriented and love to blend up "green" smoothies. Go Leopards!
Lakeview Spotlight is a new section dedicated to learning more about our teachers, staff and school. We are leading up to Lakeview's 60th birthday in 2015!

Classroom Yearbook Photographers Needed!
Everybody smile! The Yearbook Committee is desperately seeking photographers for two classrooms! If we do not have photographers for every class the yearbook committee may have to restructure the yearbook to exclude the class candid pages.
Coulter 1st Grade Nease 2nd Grade The Classroom Photographer needs to submit about 20 candid photos of small groups of students in mid February. Photos are usually taken during class parties or field trips. A digital camera is required but it need not be a "fancy" camera. Point and Shoots are perfect for the task! (Note: cell phone photos are not generally usable.) The Yearbook Committee will contact you with more specific information if you volunteer. Please contact Jenny Carlson fiveftjen@gmail.com if interested.
