Principal WestraPrincipal's Corner

Lakeview Families,

I know you hear me talk a lot about the importance of reading with your children. I thought the beginning of the school year is a great time for another reminder.

Jim Trelease, author of "The Read Aloud Handbook" asks and answers, among others, two interesting questions about reading.

Q. Do the best readers share any common habits?

A. Yes. The best readers have the highest frequency of teachers and parents reading aloud to them as well as the highest frequency of silent sustained reading.

Q. How can something as simple as reading to a child be so effective?

A. Reading to a child...

1) ...conditions the brain to associate reading with pleasure

2) ...creates background knowledge

3) ...builds vocabulary and
4) ...provides a reading role model.

I know I've shared this before but it's powerful and something that we should remember each school year. The difference made by reading twenty minutes a day with your child is incredibly powerful. So keep reading with your child each night! It's one of the most important things you can do for them!

Spotlight on Lakeview! Counselor Marcee Ben-Menachem

My name is Marcee Ben-Menachem and this is my 7th year as the School Counselor at Lakeview. I absolutely LOVE my job and working with your children! As the school counselor I provide social and emotional support to all children to help them develop or maintain a solid foundation that allows them to be ready to learn at school. I do this by presenting guidance lessons in each class for 7-10 weeks during the school year. I also offer some small groups focused on various social/emotional topics (such as friendship, divorce, and personal growth), and individual support for students with a variety of needs. When I'm not working with your amazing children at school, I'm out discovering the world with my husband, our 3 year old son and our dog Jake. I love ferry boats and the island life, so we spend much of our free-time on Bainbridge Island (my home town) where we take part in the arts and hanging out at the beach, rain or shine.

Lakeview Spotlight is a new section dedicated to learning more about our teachers, staff and school. We are leading up to Lakeview's 60th birthday in 2015!
