Principal WestraPrincipal's Corner

Lakeview Families,

It has been so fun having your students back at school!

We know that our most successful, well-adjusted students are those whose parents are involved in their education and are in tune with their school day.

If you're like me, you like to ask your kids about their day. I'll say things like, "How was your day?" or "What is something fun that you learned?" I'm usually met with responses like, "It was good", or "I can't really remember".

I read an article recently with some suggestions about questions to ask your student about his/her day at school. I wanted to share them with you because I thought they were great.

  1. Tell me about the best part of your day.
  2. What was the hardest thing you had to do today?
  3. Did any of your classmates do anything funny?
  4. Tell me about what you read in class.
  5. Who did you play with today? What did you play?
  6. Do you think math [or any subject] is too easy or too hard?
  7. What's the biggest difference between this year and last year?
  8. What rules are different at school than our rules at home?
  9. Who did you sit with at lunch?
  10. Can you show me something you learned (or did) today?

They also suggest starting with an anecdote from your own day to get the conversation started. I'm going to make it a goal to start asking more pointed questions of my own kids. Hopefully this helps you as well.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Rebekah
