Lakeview Families,

One of the greatest things about working in education is having a new start and a finish every year. It allows us the chance to reflect on a year and set goals for the upcoming one. The end of a school year is one of my favorite times, and not just because it means summer vacation is around the corner! I get nostalgic as the year comes to an end. I think about my own end of year experiences as a child and the rites of passage that I'll remember forever.

We have a lot of such events coming up at Lakeview over the next few weeks. These are important, indelible moments that we hope your student will remember long into adulthood. I hope that you will be able to come experience them with your child.

The Art Walk and primary and kindergarten choir concerts are great opportunities for your kiddos to show off their talents and see and hear the talents of others. The egg drop is a much anticipated event that has our school buzzing. We will be having a field day for the first time in a while (ever?). This is a classic elementary school event that I'm really excited for! We will bid our fifth graders goodbye and will celebrate them in a promotion ceremony. There are class parties and fun field trips to look forward to.

Please come join us in celebrating the end of a wonderful year!

Thanks,

Rebekah

Lakeview Art Walk
Art Walk is the PTSA Art Enrichment Program's Annual event where each child's work is showcased. Each month parent volunteers lead art lessons in Lakeview classrooms. This event is an opportunity to showcase just a snippet of the amazing art our children create.

Our annual event will be tonight from 6:00 - 8:00pm. This year's theme is Gallery Night. The Art will be showcased in the hallways and shared spaces of the lower level at Lakeview. Please join us for a night of community, food and Art.
Volunteer Tea
The annual Volunteer Tea will be held on Tuesday, 6/3 at 8:00am. This is an event to celebrate all the wonderful Lakeview volunteers who have shared their time and energy with the children and school throughout the year. Everyone will enjoy treats, a performance by the Beginning Choir performance and a fun raffle!
Lakeview BBQ Lunch
You are invited to join your children for a school BBQ lunch on Wednesday, 6/4 during all lunch times. We will be serving hamburgers, veggie burgers, hot dogs, salads, fruit, chips and drinks. Students will have the choice to pay for lunch with their meal cards or with cash ($2.50). The cost for adults is $3.25. We look forward to seeing you for our end of year BBQ lunch!
Lakeview Yearbooks
Forget to pre-order a yearbook? A limited quantity will be available for purchase before and after school during the following days:

Zeno Math Teacher Profile: Luke Johnson
Each year our non-profit partner Zeno Math provides funding for 5 scholarships for teachers to attend the National Conference of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). Candidates submit three essays on how they are helping to promote math in their schools. In April of 2012, Mr. Johnson (2nd grade) was selected to attend the NCTM in Philadelphia.

There he participated in small discussion groups, attended math presentations from leading professors and math professionals and learned the latest math teaching best practices. Upon his return, he shared much of what he learned with the staff at Lakeview. While there, he learned about the Reflex Math program. After district approval, the Lakeview PTSA purchased Reflex Math for Grades 2nd-5th.

As a result, our student mathematicians incorporate Reflex Math into their home study helping them to learn their math facts with "automacity."
Research exists to indicate that computational fluency is critical when students attempt to master higher order mathematics.

Bravo to Mr. Johnson for being a champion for math at Lakeview!
