Principal's Corner
Principal Westra
Recently I have been doing building tours for new kindergarten parents. As we walk down the halls parents are always interested in the student art work hung on the walls. On the most recent tour, a parent, looking at art work, commented that we clearly had a wonderful art program. When I explained that our art program is completely run by parent volunteers, she was amazed. I went on to explain how the program works. Each class has a dedicated parent docent who, each month, brings supplies and curriculum to either the classroom or the art room, delivers instruction, and works with the students to complete the project. Those docents then display the work in the halls. Supplies, too, are provided by the PTSA.

The parent was impressed, and began to ask more questions about our parent support and PTSA. This gave me the opportunity to brag about our wonderful parent community at Lakeview. While I've always known that our art docent program is remarkable, it was neat to explain it to a different audience and witness their astonishment at the level of support and involvement our students receive from parents.

A big thank you to Malia Karlinsky and Ginger Barry who spend more hours than I can imagine running and facilitating this fantastic program.  And thank you to all of our wonderful art docents. We are grateful!
