Lakeview Families,

Some of you might be aware of our conflict management system, Kelso's Choices and Steps to Respect, but others may not. This is a long standing, proven program that has been used for years both in our school and district-wide. I wanted to tell you a little bit about it so, if it comes up at home, you can understand the language your students are using.

Kelso's Choices is the program we use for grades kindergarten through second grade. Steps to Respect is an adapted version for our older students. You may have seen posters in classrooms and throughout the school.

Our counselor, Mrs. Ben-Menachem teaches lessons about this problem solving system in classrooms throughout the year. Students are taught that there are both "big problems" and "small problems". Big problems are problems that need to be taken to an adult. These are problems that are scary, dangerous, or illegal. Small problems are problems that cause feelings of annoyance, embarrassment, or boredom. Students are taught how to distinguish between the two types of problems.

When faced with a small problem, students are encouraged to attempt to resolve them on their own before taking them to an adult. They are taught that, when confronted with a small problem, they have nine options. They can: wait and cool off, go to another game, talk it out, share and take turns, ignore it, walk away, tell them to stop, apologize, or make a deal.

Again, this is not a program that is new but, as I talk with parents about problems and conflict management, I realize that this might be a point of interest and help for you.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

LWSD Levy and Bond Measure Update
Dear Lakeview Parents,
Thank you to everyone who voted in favor of the LWSD levies and bond measure in February.  The levies passed by a mile, with nearly 65% support, when only 50% was necessary. To my dismay, the bond measure failed to pass, with 57.7% yes votes where 60% were needed. I wish a simple majority were needed for bonds, as for levies, but that's a bigger issue, and there is a more immediate one that needs your help.

After some rapid research into why a significant fraction of voters did not feel they could support the bond, two issues became clear. First, the total price was too high, and second, voters without children in LWSD schools do not appreciate the seriousness of the overcrowding in our schools. The district student body will grow by 500 kids a year for at least the next four years, and that's not a wild guess: it's a forecast based on how many preschoolers already live in the district. Next year we will enroll more elementary students than the total capacity of our 27 elementary schools, including portables. Within three years the same is true for all grade levels K through 12. Without additional space, class sizes will have to increase significantly throughout the system.

(Warning: incoming hyperbole!)

Obvious solutions to the overcrowding problem include:
1. Distance learning: kindergarten students with an Xbox can obviously learn at home!
2. Bunk desks: sort of like bunk beds, so that we can fit more kids into each existing classroom.
3. Start rumors that the schools are haunted, so new families will stay away.

(Back to being serious)

The district has put a revised bond measure on the April 22 ballot. The total cost of the revised bond is still $404 million, although it contains only the construction projects required within four years to alleviate overcrowding. Renovations of deteriorating facilities at existing schools like Peter Kirk are still needed, but have been postponed to a future bond.

You might think that what is needed is your Yes vote on the revised bond, but what is really needed is outreach to voters without children. The precincts covering retirement communities had high voter turnout, but voted against the bond, in some cases reaching 60% no. In order to pass the revised bond we need to swing those voters. So please get out there and talk to voters without children in school. Help them understand the overcrowding crisis that our schools are experiencing, and how a Yes vote will preserve the high quality of local public schools.

Thank you,
Chris Carlson
