Lakeview Families,

Thank you for your participation in your student's conference this week. Our teachers worked hard to ensure the time spent was meaningful and helpful in giving you a snapshot of your child's progress and goals.

At the conference, teachers presented your child's report card. This report card reflects current performance

on both the Washington State Standards and the national Common Core State Standards. We also include current performance on the Interdisciplinary Skills, Attributes, and Content Knowledge from the Lake Washington School District Student Profile.

Below is some information provided by LWSD Office of Assessment:

Trend Grading:

Measuring current performance on the standards for each student helps teachers target areas in which your child needs assistance and where he/she is already meeting or exceeding standard. Teachers collect a variety of scores on in-class tests, assignments, and homework. Each score is then entered into an electronic grade book which shows trends of growth for each standard. These trends run for the entire school year so we have a precise understanding of how your child is performing on each standard at all times. At report card time, we take a 'snapshot' of how your child is performing currently and report it to you via this report card.

It is important to note that the marks used in the standards-based system do not correlate to traditional letter grades (A - F) nor are trends calculated using an "average" of scores entered. Trends are calculated using a formula that tracks progress over time and gives credence for more experience on any given skill.

Level "2" Scores:

Scores on the first report card of the year reflect learning on new grade level standards so parents will likely see some "2's" on their child's report card. A score of "2" reflects that a student is making progress or "approaching" standard. It is very important that parents do not equate a "2" with an "F" from older, traditional scoring scales. In a standards-based grading system, "2's" truly mean a child is making progress on the standard being measured. It is more likely that you'll see "2's" during the first grading period when students are first learning new grade level standards.

As always, if you have questions, please contact us.

Thanks and have a wonderful weekend!

Rebekah
