Principal's Corner
Principal Westra
November doesn't get the credit it deserves. It barely gets started before stores and media start hyping up December. It's too bad because November is one of my favorite months. I love the crisp air that comes with November. I love the colors. I love that November kicks off the entire holiday season of which I cannot get enough. I love that November provides an occasion for me more time to spend with my family both immediate and extended. Mostly, though, I love November because it reminds me to be grateful.

I do have much to be grateful for. In addition to the wonderful things like my dear family, good health, a warm home, and a full refrigerator, I'm grateful to be in this profession. With an admitted bias, I'm convinced it's the greatest profession in the world. Imagine my gratitude when my eight year old daughter recently announced that she has decided to be a teacher when she grows up because "I'm good at explaining things and I like making people understand."

I'm grateful to work daily with a talented group of educators at this school who are dedicated, smart, patient, and kind beyond measure. I'm grateful for the supportive, hardworking Lakeview parents who value education, our students, and to whom maintaining a sense of community is important. I'm extremely grateful this season of gratitude to be working with your children at this remarkable school. I'm grateful for the energy boost they give me and for the example of perpetual happiness, optimism, and inquiry they are to me daily.

Enjoy the rest of your November and be grateful.

With deep gratitude,

Rebekah

Winter Wishes
Winter Wishes, a Lakeview tradition, allows the community to show they care by helping families share in the joy of gift giving and receiving during the holiday season. Marcee Ben-Menachem, our school counselor, confidentially facilitates gathering the wishes from our Winter Wishes families and delivering the gifts to them. Lakeview students, with their parents then select one or more of these wishes and fulfill them for these families.

Beginning on Tuesday, 11/12 through Friday, 12/6, gift tags will be available for pick up both before and after school in the front office.
Bring all items unwrapped to school office on or before Friday, 12/13.  (They are donated to a local charity after this date). We will also have a collection area at the Lakeview Multicultural Night. Please return all gifts with their original Winter Wishes tag attached with the family number and gift number. For questions or to help out, please contact Dana Laursen at danalaursen@live.com.
Lake Washington PTSA Council Basket Auction
From now through December 5th come by the Lake Washington School District office at Redmond Town Center to bid on wonderful auction baskets and raffle items donated by schools across the district including Lakeview. Monies earned from the basket auction go towards scholarships for graduating seniors. Baskets are on display in the main area of the district office. Raffle tickets are $1. Multicultural Night Thursday, 12/5
Everyone is invited to join the potluck for Lakeview's Second Annual Multicultural Night to be held on Thursday, 12/5 from 5:30-7:30pm in the gym. Bring your favorite dish from your cultural background. Enjoy tasty foods from around the world. Take time to look at the art on display.  Participate in a cultural fashion parade. Come dressed in the traditional clothing of your ancestors or just come as you are and enjoy the evening with us! If you are interested in helping with set-up or clean up, please contact Diana Giraldo Cummings at dgiraldo@htnb.com.
Ski Bus: Last Chance!
Applications for the Snow Sports Program are due by Monday, 11/18. The program is open to 2nd through 5th grade skiers and snowboarders. Beginning in January, on Wednesdays at 2:15pm, a chartered bus will transport students from school to the Summit at Snoqualmie Pass for a 2 1/2 hour lesson. Students return to Lakeview around 7:30pm. The program runs for 6 weeks beginning on Wednesday, 1/8. (Sessions will be extended if weather forces cancelation of a class). Participation is on a first come, first served basis. At this time we have enough students for only one bus. All students who turn in forms after the cut off number will be placed on a wait list.

For more information, go to the Ski Bus Page on the Lakeview PTSA website: http://lakeviewptsa.org/ptsa-programs/before-after-school-enrichment-2/ski-bus/. Download the form and turn it into the school's front office: http://lakeviewptsa.org/files/2013/07/Lakeview-On-snow-Registration-Form-13-14.pdf.
PTSA General Meeting and Movie Night Thursday, 12/12
Bring your kids (4 years and older) to see Monsters University, while parents get together for the PTSA General Meeting to hear Chris Carlson, Lakeview Dad and member of the Lake Washington School Board, answer your questions about school funding, curriculum and growth plans. Ms. Westra will also discuss the district bond and levy. The movie will begin promptly at 6pm. We'll have water, pizza and snacks for sale. Cash or checks only. Parents will need to stay next door in the cafeteria for the PTSA meeting. No drop-offs.

Explore the NEW PTSA Website!

We want to make sure everyone can easily find all the information they need about the many things the PTSA does at Lakeview, so we created a brand new PTSA website. Find out about enrichment classes, family fun nights, volunteer opportunities, and much much more! We hope you'll bookmark it (http://lakeviewptsa.org) and check it often to stay informed about what's going on at Lakeview.
