Lakeview Families,

In a study I read recently conducted by The Parent Institute, principals across the country were asked what one piece of advice they would give parents. I found it especially interesting that, of all the advice they would give, the first and most important piece was to take time to talk with your children and to listen to them.

Certainly we all live lives that are far faster paced than we would probably like them to be. I know my family eats more meals while walking out the door, putting on coats, and getting into the car than I care to admit, but I love the reminder about listening. Not listening while looking at our phones. Not listening while we pick up the pile of shoes by the front door. Not pretending to listen while we are trying to remember what we meant to buy at the grocery store. The kind of listening our kids need is the actual sitting down, being present, making eye contact, being attentive, and engaging in a conversation with them kind of listening.

Here is the list of all seven pieces of advice:

1.Take time to talk with your children, and listen

to what they have to say.

2.Take an active interest in your child and what he or she is doing in school--and monitor their progress. Ask questions like, "What was the most interesting thing you did today?" "What did you do best today?" "What is coming up tomorrow?"

3. Let your children know you love them. Take the time to show that you care.

4. Help build your child's self-esteem, the opinion she has of herself.

5. Teach children to be responsible.
Tell them that you love them and hold them accountable for their decisions. Tell them up-front the positive and negative consequences certain behavior will result in. Give your child responsibilities at home.

6. Read to and with your children every day.

7. Make certain kids spend time on homework
. Provide a consistent place for and create a set time for homework.

Have a wonderful week!

Veterans' Day Celebration, 11/8
The Lakeview Veterans' Day Assembly will be held on Friday, 11/8 at 9:15am in the gym. The assembly will feature a performance from each grade level and the Intermediate Choir. Please invite any veterans you know to attend!  Also, please bring in a labeled copy of a picture (no originals please) of any veterans from your family for our "Wall of Honor" displaying veterans who are connected to our Lakeview community!  If you know of a Veteran who might like to speak at or help out with our assembly, please contact our music teacher Mrs. Brackett at rbrackett@lwsd.org.
Family Game Night, 11/14
Lakeview Family Game Night will be Thursday, 11/14 from 6-8pm in the gym. This year's theme is superheroes! Kids and adults alike are invited to come as your favorite superhero, or make up your own. While not required, it is a great time to wear super hero t-shirts, costumes, paint your face or wear a cape! There will be a short social hour from 6-6:30pm with pizza and drinks available for sale before the games begin. For more information, please visit the Lakview PTSA website. Volunteer opportunities available.  Contact jennifer_loy@hotmail.com if you are interested.
Multicultural Night Thursday, 12/5
Everyone is invited to join the potluck for Lakeview's Second Annual Multicultural Night to be held on Thursday, 12/5 from 5:30-7:30pm in the gym. Bring your favorite dish from your cultural background. Enjoy tasty foods from around the world. Take time to look at the art on display.  Participate in a cultural fashion parade. Come dressed in the traditional clothing of your ancestors or just come as you are and enjoy the evening with us! If you are interested in helping with set-up or clean up, please contact Diana Giraldo Cummings at dgiraldo@htnb.com.
Reflections Entries On Display
Please stop by the Lakeview library to see all the beautiful artwork our students have created. Entries are available for viewing through Monday, 11/4. For the 2013-14 school year, the Reflections theme is: "Believe, Dream, Inspire". Thank you for supporting all of our young artists.
The Lakeview PTSA Directory Is Here!
The school directory was delivered to your child to take home this week.  All families who join the PTSA receive one directory for free.  If you should have received one, and you have not received it yet, please email lakptsamembership@gmail.com to request a copy.  If you are not a PTSA member, but would like to buy a directory, or would like an extra copy, they are available for purchase for $10 each. Please email Mary Pund at lakptsamembership@gmail.com to place your order.  We do have extras, but they will be available on a first come, first served basis.
Ski Bus Registration Is Open Now
Applications are currently being accepted for the Snow Sports Program for 2nd through 5th grade skiers and snowboarders. On Wednesdays beginning in January a chartered bus will transport students from Lakeview to the Summit at Snoqualmie Pass for a 2 1/2 hour lesson. The bus leaves Lakeview at 2:15pm and returns around 7:30pm. The program runs for 6 weeks beginning on Wednesday, 1/8. (Sessions will be extended if weather forces cancellation of a class). Participation is on a first come, first served basis. There is no guarantee that we will have enough students for 2 buses this year. So turn those forms in soon to avoid being placed on the wait list!

The deadline for applications is Monday, 11/18. For more information, go to the Ski Bus Page on the Lakeview PTSA website. Download the form and turn it into the school's front office.

Hola and hello! Learning is in full swing at Sponge, but it's not too late to join the fun in Spanish classes this fall! Our current unit, Check-Up, centers around vocabulary and phrases related to expressing our feelings and emotions, identifying body parts, and visiting the doctor. Native-speaking teachers guide students through a curriculum devoted to active learning that places language in context through games, stories, art and music!
Sponge is excited to be offering Spanish for K-2nd students at Lakeview Elementary. Visit www.spongeschool.com for more information and to register. Feel free to email Sponge at info@spongeschool.com with any and all questions! Register today and secure your spot in class!
Zeno Monthly Math Challenges
This Year, all of the math challenges will have to do with algebra.
Here is a fun way to discuss algebra with your children. Have you ever considered that algebra is simply solving a puzzle? With computer games you play by running, jumping or finding secret things. Well, with algebra you play with letters, numbers and symbols, and you get to find secret things! Once you learn some of the "tricks", it becomes a fun challenge to work out how to use your skills in solving each "puzzle".

Thank you to Lakeview parents Anne & Tim Moore (Julia & Lexi) for their generous donation of Pokemon items for our Math Challenge prize box.
