Lakeview Families,

As educators, we talk a lot about the importance of reading to our children both in school and at home. This is something that I'm very interested in so I recently started reading The Read Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease. While we have heard a lot about the importance of reading to and with your child every day, I've learned some things I'd like to share with you. Mr. Trelease asks and answers, among others, two interesting questions.

Q. Do the best readers share any common habits?

A. Yes. The best readers have the highest frequency of teachers and parents reading aloud to them as well as the highest frequency of silent sustained reading.

Q. How can something as simple as reading to a child be so effective?

A. Reading to a child...

1) ...conditions the brain to associate reading with pleasure

2) ...creates background knowledge

3) ...builds vocabulary and
4)
...provides a reading role model.

The Twenty Minutes Reading graphic provides a powerful visual for the importance of consistent, daily reading. So thanks for reading with your children! It's one of the most important activities you can do with them.

Have a wonderful week,
Rebekah

Special PTSA General Membership Meeting
Monday, 10/21 from 3:15-3:50pm in the Lakeview library there will be a Special PTSA General Membership Meeting to approve the final purchase of new playground equipment. Please come and view the playground equipment model, speak with playground committee representatives Kjersten Ferullo and Johnathan Milstein, and vote to approve the budget expenditure. A full membership vote is required to align the with current state PTSA Bylaws. The sooner the membership votes, the sooner the playground equipment can be ordered and installed. This is also a great sneak peek into what the upcoming Jog-a-thon has in store for our kids. Your vote is needed! Thank you for your support!

Calling All Student Artists! It's Reflections Time Agian!
The Reflections Program is a National PTA and Washington State PTA cultural arts competition. The purpose of this program is to provide an opportunity for students to use their creative talents by expressing themselves through their own original works. Each year, Reflections challenges students to create art that supports a specific theme.

For the 2013-14 school year, the Reflections theme is: "Believe, Dream, Inspire". A student may submit an entry in any of six arts areas. Only original works of art are accepted. The six art areas are: Literature, Music Composition, Photography, Visual Arts, Film/Video and Choreography/Dance. Entries are due by Thursday, 10/24, and entry forms are available through your teacher or in the magazine rack in the school lobby. All entries will be on display at the school for the week following.

The rules and forms for this year can be found at www.wastatepta.org/programs/reflections. Additional information is available on the Lakeview PTSA website at http://lakeviewptsa.org/ptsa-programs/art-program-2/reflections/.  Questions? Contact Jen Stofleth at lakptsareflections@gmail.com.
Carnival Chair or Co-chairs Needed!
Every year, families come to enjoy an afternoon of fun and games at the
Lakeview Carnival. The school classrooms and gym are transformed by the festival atmosphere with a bouncy slide, as well as games, such as balloon darts, bean bag toss, lollipop tree and of course, the cake walk. This year's carnival is scheduled for Friday, 2/7, but unfortunately, we don't have anyone to lead the activity.  Please consider helping out by heading up this great event. We have a team of volunteers ready to help you create an amazing experience and continue this wonderful Lakeview tradition.

What's involved?
Oversee budget and event committee, including Games, Food, Prizes and
Volunteers. (Many of the volunteers are high school students earning Service Learning Credits for their own school.) Advertise the Carnival in the school newsletter, e-postcard, and reader board. Help with set-up/clean up.
Coordinate with school staff. Time Commitment: Jan/Feb, 15 - 20 hours.

Halloween Costume Donations
Halloween is right around the corner and Lakeview PTSA would like every child at Lakeview to have the opportunity to have a costume. Do you have a gently used Halloween costume that your child is no longer wearing? If so, you can donate the washed and clean costume to the school! The costumes can be dropped off in Mrs. Green's room (#129 ) from now until Friday, 10/25.

If your child is in need of a costume, your family can come and "shop" in Mrs. Green's room and see if something will work on Monday, 10/28 from 7:30 -8:30am or after school from 3:30 - 4:00pm. Any costumes not used will be donated to a local clothing bank.
Veteran's Day Celebration
The Lakeview Veteran's Day Assembly will be held on Friday, 11/8 at 9:15am in the gym. The assembly will feature a performance from each grade level and the Intermediate Choir. Please invite any veterans you know to attend!  Also, please bring in a labeled copy of a picture (no originals please) of any veterans from your family for our "Wall of Honor" displaying veterans who are connected to our Lakeview community!  If you know of a Veteran who might like to speak at or help out with our assembly, please contact our music teacher Mrs. Brackett at rbrackett@lwsd.org.
Mark your Calendars!
Lakeview Family Game Night will be Thursday, 11/14 from 6-8pm in the gym. This year's theme is superheroes! Kids and adults alike are invited to come as your favorite superhero, or make up your own. While not required, it is a great time to wear super hero t-shirts, costumes, paint your face or wear a cape! There will be a short social hour from 6-6:30pm with pizza and drinks available for sale before the games begin. For more information, please visit the Lakview PTSA website.
