Lakeview Families,

We know that it is very important to not only read with our children but to ask them questions about what they are reading. Talking to your students about what they are reading is important on a lot of levels but is an especially great opportunity to teach them to think critically about what they read and apply it to their lives. I believe that one of the most important things we can teach our students, and something that we work hard on as a staff, is the skill to think critically. It can, however, be difficult to ask questions of your child about a book which you may or may not have read.

I've included a link to the grid of Bloom's Taxonomy and some possible question stems you can use when talking to your child about what he/she is reading. Bloom's taxonomy is a classification of learning objectives that was created by educator Benjamin Bloom. This taxonomy is commonly used in education to promote higher level thinking skills and quality questioning among our students. It is our goal to move from the basic factual recall questions (knowledge) up the taxonomy to the levels that require critical thinking (evaluation and synthesis) from our students.

Consider using this tool when you ask your student about what he/she learned in school or what they are reading. Let's assume, for sake of example, your child is reading Snow White. Instead of asking questions like, "How many dwarves were there?" or "What happened when the huntsman took Snow White to the woods?" consider asking questions (using the question stems below) that require your child to think more critically. You might ask your child, "How would you feel if you were the queen?" or "How would you devise your own way to outsmart the queen?"

You can turn this grid into a bookmark so it is always handy for this exercise. Using it is a fun way to teach the important skill of critical thinking and also engage with your child about what they are reading.

Enjoy!

Rebekah

First Skate King Party!
Please join us for our first Skate King party of the year on Thursday, 10/10 from 6-8:00 p.m. at Bellevue Skate King.  All Lakeview families are invited to attend. Students must be accompanied by an adult who stays to supervise them and all students must bring the waiver signed along with $8 for the admittance fee. Students without an adult supervisor and waiver will not be allowed to enter. This is a 5th grade fundraiser for field trips.  Thanks for your support!
Lakeview Jog-a-thon: Stride for Pride
Yesterday was the kick-off for Lakeview's biggest fundraising event of the year. Jog-a-thon 2013 will take place on Wednesday, 10/23.

Students brought home donation envelopes yesterday. Inside each envelope is an information packet including Frequently Asked Questions, a list of companies in the area that match donations, donation receipts and more. We are asking Lakeview families to show their pride for our school by helping us reach our fundraising goal of $40,000. Donation envelopes are due back no later than the day of the Jog-a-thon, Wednesday, 10/23.

Be sure to check the front of the envelope for the list of prizes. If you would like to volunteer to help on the day of the Jog-a-thon, please contact Carrie Goodrich at lakptsafundraising@gmail.com.
Calling All Student Artists! It's Reflections Time Again!
The Reflections Program is a National PTA and Washington State PTA cultural arts competition. The purpose of this program is to provide an opportunity for students to use their creative talents by expressing themselves through their own original works. Each year, Reflections challenges students to create art that supports a specific theme.

For the 2013-14 school year, the Reflections theme is: "Believe, Dream, Inspire". A student may submit an entry in any of six arts areas. Only original works of art are accepted. The six art areas are: Literature, Music Composition, Photography, Visual Arts, Film/Video and Choreography/Dance. Entries are due by Thursday, 10/24 and entry forms are available through your teacher or in the magazine rack in the school lobby. All entries will be on display at the school for the week following.

The rules and forms for this year can be found at www.wastatepta.org/programs/reflections. Additional information is available on the Lakeview PTSA website at http://lakeviewptsa.org/ptsa-programs/art-program-2/reflections/.  Questions? Contact Jen Stofleth at lakptsareflections@gmail.com.

Anti-Bullying Advisory Committee
Parent representatives are needed for a new advisory committee focusing on bullying prevention. The Anti-Bullying Advisory Committee (A-BAC) will consist of students, parents, teachers, administrators, and community members from LWSD. Monthly meetings will be held on Thursdays from 4-6:00 p.m. at Lake Washington Resource Center.

If you are interested in joining this advisory, please send an email to Ken Lyon, HIB Compliance Officer, klyon@lwsd.org. Everyone is welcome to be involved.
Wanted: Classroom Yearbook Photographers!
Everyone smile! The Yearbook Committee is looking for a few more photographers. The following classes are in jeopardy of missing out on the "candids" page in this year's yearbook:

Mrs. Gahnberg's Kindergarten class
Mrs. Tiffany's 3rd Grade class
Mrs. Adams' 4th Grade class
Mrs. Boradori's 4th Grade class
Mrs. Edwards' 5th Grade class

The Classroom Photographer would need to submit about 20 candid photographs of groups of students in mid February. Photos are usually taken during class parties or field trips. A digital camera is required but you don't need to have a fancy camera. Point and shoot cameras are perfect for the task! The Yearbook Committee will contact you with more specific information if you volunteer. Please contact Jenny Carlson (fiveftjen@gmail.com) if interested.
