2013 Egg Drop Experiment Event Today, Friday 4/5!
Who's ready for the egg drop challenge? Students created contraptions that will attempt to protect an egg from a 60 foot drop. The Kirkland Fire Department will be here with their ladder truck to see whose egg will survive! All students, K-5 are invited to participate and parents are welcome to watch.
Schedule: 11:50am for grades 2-3, 12:20pm for K-1, and 1:15pm for grades 4-5. Just look for the truck!

Volunteer Spotlight: Art Docents Make Clay Projects Possible
There are many facets to the Lakeview PTSA sponsored Art Docent Program. One of the most exciting parts of our art program is Clay. This year we have had a new team of Parent Docent Volunteers who have taken over the very busy duties that come with having clay available at our school. Deepti Shankar and Karee Oliver, our new kiln gurus, work continuously to make sure that our students' artwork is complete and fired not once but twice. Their duties also include managing our after school enrichment programs pieces of art. We are so grateful to Deepti, Karee and their growing team of volunteers for making clay so fun and for giving us the opportunity to include it in our art program at Lakeview.

Walking Wednesdays

We had a HUGE turnout for Walking Wednesdays in March!

·169 kids walked at least 3 Wednesdays (up from 117)
·233 kids walked at least 1 Wednesday
·3 teachers participated

Umbrellas have been handed out to the most frequent walkers. Lakeview shoelaces will be handed out after spring break to every child who walked in March.

Do you live too far to walk?  Try one of our Park and Walk locations:
·4th Ave S. and State St - North of Lakeview
·9th Ave. S. and 7th St. S. - near Everest Park
·110th Ave NE cul-de-sac - Fire Station Path
·106th Ave NE and 60th St. - South of Lakeview

Check out the web page for more info. And keep walking & biking - the April prize is a good one!

PTSA Officers 2013-2014

Please welcome our new Lakeview PTSA Officers for the 2013-2014 school year, elected at last Thursday's general meeting. Thank you for volunteering!

President: Megan Gardner
VP: Jenni Heuberger
Treasurer: Rachelle Kortus & Julie Barker
Secretary: Sarah Goldkamp
Wanted: Enrichment Chair. The Lakeview PTSA Needs You!

For the past few years, Karee Oliver has been our Education Enrichment Chair on the PTSA Board. She has devoted countless hours to organizing and shepherding one of the most fulsome before and after school enrichment programs in the area. Because of Karee, our children have had the opportunity to pursue a wide variety of extra-curricular interests in areas such as Art, Chess, Legos, Math, Drama, Spanish and Science. Next year, Karee will be retiring from her role as Education Enrichment Chair, but is not leaving the Board. She will be taking on the School Services Chair position, which is responsible for Hearing and Vision Screening, School Pictures and Emergency Preparedness. We should all take our hats off to Karee for the wonderful work she has done!

Unfortunately, that leaves us in desperate need of someone to take the lead role on the Enrichment Team as Enrichment Chair for next year. Could it be you? If we don't find someone, we are in jeopardy of losing our before and after school programs. Two members of the Enrichment Team are planning to continue in the roles of Enrichment General Assistant and Registration Intake. Please consider reaching out to Karee or Megan Gardner, our incoming President for 2013-2014, for details.

Lakeview Science Fair on 4/18

Calling all young scientists! Are your students working on a cool experiment or invention this year? Share that work with other students at the science fair on Thursday, 4/18. Pacific Science Center will be bringing their "Blood and Guts" exhibit to show everyone how our bodies work.  Other demonstrations will include: Lego robotics, the City of Kirkland and an Aquatic Bug Dip. This will be a fun and educational family event, so please join us even if you don't have a project. For more information, please go to the Science Fair page on the Lakeview website. If you would like to volunteer, please use this link to sign-up: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080D4BAEAF2BA57-lakeview.

Nominate an Outstanding Lakeview Volunteer

Do you know a volunteer at Lakeview who has gone above and beyond this year, doing wonderful things for our Lakeview kids? Each year, the Lakeview PTSA gives out the "Golden Acorn Award" to recognize one very special volunteer who has given outstanding service to ALL children in the Lakeview community. The winner will be honored at our school's Volunteer Tea toward the end of the school year, so we need your input now to select them!

Using the form located here, http://www.lwsd.org/school/lakeview/SiteCollectionDocuments/GoldenAcorn.pdf, please nominate one person and include the reasons you feel they deserve the Award! This form is due back to the school by Monday, 4/15. You may send it to school with your child, or put it in the PTSA inbox. These nominations will be considered by a small committee and decided upon based on the state PTSA guidelines for this award.  If you have any questions, please contact Barbara Dettweiler at bdettweiler@hotmail.com.

Leader in Me Parent Survey
While in the process of "Pause and Reflect", the Lakeview Staff is collecting input from all stakeholders regarding the Leader In Me program at Lakeview. To gather part of this information, we determined using a survey was an efficient method to collect data.

This survey was developed for the purpose of determining whether the LIM program had met its initial goals. The survey was reviewed by Lakeview staff, and district administration and input was given where appropriate. The survey was launched by LWSD Communications Office on our behalf. It is open from 4/1 through 4/17/2013.

We value parent voice in our school and hope to have a large number of parents participating in this survey so we are aware of your perspectives on Leader In Me. Your voice is appreciated and needed! Results of the parent survey will be shared through the Lakeview newsletter.

The survey takes about 5 minutes to complete: Survey Link
