Volunteer Spotlight: Enrichment Chair

Have your students taken advantage of the many after school classes that the Lakeview PTSA has to offer? If so, they have directly benefited from the hard work and dedication of Karee Oliver, Lakeview PTSA's Enrichment Chair. The Enrichment Chair position is one of an unseen Super Hero. Karee and her team, Alison Corby, Frederieke Adriaanse and Hope Goldberg, coordinate all of the after school classes which include: Chess 4 Life, Mad Science, Spanish Language, Smart with Art and the always popular Lego Play-Well Technologies Engineering Class. Karee is always evaluating the schedule and looking to improve the class offerings. The Enrichment Chair routinely researches classes, hires vendors, advertises classes in the newsletter, creates and distributes the info sheet and registration form, collects payments, recruits chaperones, and coordinates schedules.

If you are interested in getting involved in the After School Class offerings at Lakeview, have an idea for a class, or are interested in a class scholarship (a limited number may be available for qualifying students only) send an email to: lakptsaenrichment@gmail.com.

Thank you Karee for your three years of work to help make Lakeview an awesome place for kids.

Walking Wednesday Umbrellas

We had a record 117 kids win a Lakeview Umbrella by walking or biking to school at least three Wednesdays in February. This is also the first month that every class has participated in Walking Wednesdays. Great job to all the Wednesday Walkers! If you didn't win an umbrella, you have another chance if you walk at least three Wednesdays in March.

March will also be the first month we will have a prize for everyone who walks or bikes on Wednesday, even if they only walk once! The March prize is a pair of Lakeview Shoelaces. Give it a try - it's cool to walk to school!

And if you haven't already, check out this article about recent research showing that kids who walk or bike to school have higher levels of concentration than those who don't.

Niels Egelund of Aarhus University in Denmark, who conducted the research, said in an interview that he was surprised by how beneficial exercise was for students - even more so than diet. "The results showed that having breakfast and lunch has an impact, but not very much compared to having exercised," Egelund said. "As a third-grade pupil, if you exercise and bike to school, your ability to concentrate increases to the equivalent of someone half a year further in their studies," he added.
