Pennies for Patients

The Student Leadership Program is an invaluable opportunity for our kids to become leaders at Lakeview. The Council is comprised of the Classroom Representatives and Safety Patrol Officers. The Leadership Team helps with school and community events throughout the year including: spirit days and local/global service projects.

Safety Patrol Officers arrive at school 15 minutes early or stay 15 minutes after school to monitor crosswalks, greet students, help kindergartners, and monitor children as they arrive on the bus. They work throughout the school to help students be safe coming and going from school and to help our school maintain an atmosphere that is calm and focused on learning.

The focus of Student Leadership is on community service, being positive role models for fellow students, and supporting school goals, events, staff, and students. Applications are accepted in the fall from fourth and fifth graders.

In the past, the Student Leadership Team has facilitated many community service projects. Last year they did a food drive to benefit the pantry backpack program. This year, the group has voted to lead an effort called, "Pennies for Patients", which is all about making change that makes a difference. It is a service learning, character education and philanthropy program that gives students a unique experience making a difference through teamwork-working together to aid thousands of children and adults in the fight against blood cancers like leukemia.  Learn more about the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, (LLS), and School & Youth at www.lls.org  and www.schoolandyouth.org/wa.

How it Works: Students collect spare change from Monday, 1/14 to Monday, 2/4. The change can come from friends or relatives or underneath the couch cushions! What's important is that the change is collected. Each classroom will have its own collection box.

Volunteer Spotlight: Teaching Grant Review Committee

Every year the Lakeview PTSA allocates funds to be used for Teaching Grants. This money can be requested by teachers and staff to fund academic programs, projects, or items not covered by other areas of the PTSA budget. This year $5,000 was allocated towards Teaching Grants.  Grant proposals are accepted in November and February. They are reviewed by a Teaching Grant Review Committee comprised of volunteer parents from all grades. This year's grant committee is: Jennifer Bosworth (Kindergarten), Karee Oliver (1st and 4th grades), Melanie Fida (2nd and 5th grades) Mary Pund (3rd grades), Kristi Caggiano (3rd grade), and Sonia Savelli (2nd grade). Recruiting for the Review Committee is done at the beginning of every school year via the sign up sheet in the first day packet; however, anyone wishing to become involved in the process is welcome to contact the Academic Support Chair at lakptsaacademics@gmail.com. The task of the grant review committee is to read through all grants and come to a consensus on which grants to fund. In November 2012, the grant committee received ten grant proposals and elected to fund nine proposals for a total of $3,294. The grants that were funded included a music field trip for 5th graders, a science workshop for 2nd graders, and literacy and instructional supplies for grades 1 through 5. New grants and any grants not funded in November can be submitted in February 2013. The review committee will review all grants submitted and allocate the remaining $1,706 in March 2013. If you have any questions about Teaching Grants, please contact Sonia Savelli, Academic Support Chair, at lakptsaacademics@gmail.com.

Save the Day 3/8, Change the Day

The date for the Lakeview Carnival has been changed to Friday, 3/8!
The 2013 Carnival will offer fabulous family fun from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Lakeview Elementary School. As in years past, expect an inflatable obstacle course, lots of games, prizes, food and an evening of fun! This is a great opportunity to show off your volunteering skills ... whether you might have hidden talents at set-up and clean-up, an amazing adeptness at managing the balloon dart game, or a deep desire to sit atop the inflatable obstacle course. Any and all hands are needed to make this fantastic family evening run smoothly. Please take a leap and sign up now with Carnival volunteer coordinator Megan Gardner, jhbgardner@comcast.net. If you are a prize perfectionist, or passionate about promotion, or have other burning questions, please contact Kendra Rosencrans, Carnival chairperson, at kendra.rosencrans@yahoo.com.

Step right up and change the date, the Lakeview Carnival is now March 8!

This is sponsored by the Lakeview PTSA and is offered free of charge to all Lakeview Elementary parents. Used Book Fair

Join us for our second annual Lakeview used book fair Tuesday, 1/29 thru Friday, 2/1! It's a great way to reduce, reuse and recycle those old favorites. Our stock comes directly from YOU! We hope you will take some time to go through your bookcases and weed out those titles that are no longer being used. Then donate them to the Lakeview Library to sell during our conference week fair! This event is intended to be a service, as much as it is a fundraiser. Children grow out of their books quickly and this is a wonderful way for you to get new titles in the next reading level or two. It's quite a deal at 50 cents for a paperback, $1.00 for a hardback and $3.00 for DVD's! If you have time to volunteer, we could use help setting up, cleaning up, organizing and cashiering. If you have questions or want to help with this event, please contact Mrs. (Sarah) Jensen at sajensen@lwsd.org.
