Volunteer Spotlight: Yearbook Co-chairs

The Lakeview Yearbook is always a big hit with the students -- capturing the photos, stories and friendships of the past year. And you know, someday, someone is going to be famous or do great things ... and what would looking back on these amazing elementary years be without a yearbook?

Thankfully, each year, parents volunteer to collect photos during the school year in order to capture those memories in a yearbook. This year, the volunteer co-chairs are Jenny Carlson and Melanie Fida. The Yearbook Co-Chairs work with the school portrait company and the yearbook printer to create and sell a memory book that students will cherish. All of the design is completed in an online program which is similar to, but a little more robust than, the programs used to create the photo albums that you might send to Grandma and Grandpa for the holidays.

The co-chairs lead the effort, but they don't do it alone. Volunteers in every classroom are recruited to take candid photos of students. Along with a page of students' school photos, each classroom is featured in a collage page of candid photos taken by parents and teachers. Many Lakeview events are featured as well such as Dance Night, the school play, and school assemblies.

Do you have a great photo you'd like to share? Or want to volunteer as a photographer? Even better, might you consider working on next year's Lakeview Yearbook?

If you have time, skills or ideas to contribute to this meaningful program, which depends on great parents and their volunteer energy, please email Jenny Carlson

Calling Lakeview 4th and 5th Grade Actors!

Lakeview's production of Aesop Funtastic Fables tells stories as old as time and as wise as ever! Brought together in a magical musical production, Aesop (pronounced Eee Sop) is guaranteed to enchant, educate and entertain. The tortoise and the hare, a sly old fox, a mouse who is best friends with a lion, these characters and more tell engaging stories through music and dance.
Click here to find the Aesop Funtastic Fables application packet, or pick up an application in the Lakeview front office. Applications for Lakeview 4th and 5th grade students will be accepted in the Lakeview front office beginning on Tuesday, 1/15. All applications must be received in the Lakeview front office by 9:00am Thursday, 1/17. A lottery will be held on Thursday, 1/17 by a PTSA representative and the play's producers. The first 45 names chosen in the lottery will participate in the school play.  Any additional applications will be placed on a waitlist. Auditions and rehearsals begin Monday, 1/28 for Aesop Funtastic Fables. Performances will be held at Lake Washington High School on Wednesday, 3/13 and Thursday, 3/14.

Martin Luther King Jr. Assembly
Lakeview will celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Junior, Friday, 1/18 at 9:15am in the gym. This special assembly will feature readings and songs about the life and message of this amazing man and his legacy of peace, justice and equality for all people. Each grade level will perform a special song. Families are welcome to attend! There is no school on Monday, 1/21 in remembrance of Dr. King. Please contact Rachel Brackett, Lakeview Music, with any questions.

Used Book Fair

Join us for our second annual Lakeview used book fair Tuesday, 1/29 thru Friday, 2/1! It's a great way to reduce, reuse and recycle those old favorites. Our stock comes directly from YOU! We hope you will take some time to go through your bookcases and weed out those titles that are no longer being used. Then donate them to the Lakeview Library to sell during our conference week fair! This event is intended to be a service, as much as it is a fundraiser. Children grow out of their books quickly and this is a wonderful way for you to get new titles in the next reading level or two. It's quite a deal at 50 cents for a paperback, $1.00 for a hardback and $3.00 for DVD's! If you have time to volunteer, we could use help setting up, cleaning up, organizing and cashiering. If you have questions or want to help with this event, please contact Mrs. (Sarah) Jensen at sajensen@lwsd.org.

Parent Education Lecture

The LWHS-PTSA presents a parent education lecture entitled "Youth Cyber-Safety and the Risks of Social Media - What Every Family Needs to Know" on Wednesday, 1/23 from 7-9pm at the LWHS Theater. This lively presentation by veteran presenter and attorney Charles Leitch will focus on how to approach use of technology with our young people and to understand the current risks they face. Ideas on how to approach these issues and to engage in a meaningful discussion will be reviewed as well as the role of schools and the legal limits they currently face. A primary goal will be greater understanding and empowerment as a parent in an age when young people seem to understand their technology better than adults. The cost is free. For more information, please visit the Lake Washington High School website.

WSPTA Focus Day Rally 2013

The WA State PTA legislative platform for the next two years is set. Now we have to do something with it! Focus Day is Thursday, 1/24 in Olympia. This is the best opportunity to advocate for our kids using a loud, cohesive voice and sharing our new legislative platform with our state legislators. This is a huge opportunity, not only to deliver our message, but to engage in PTA outreach by encouraging participation by members in historically under-represented regions, and to increase membership and general civic involvement. For more information or to register, please visit www.wastatepta.org.

Leaping Our Leopards into the Future

The Lakeview Auction is only a few months away! Mark your calendars for a fabulous night out on Saturday, 5/11! We are still looking for auction sponsors to help offset the auction costs. Let us know if you have a business that would like to donate. We will begin asking for donated auction items next month. If you or your company is interested or would like to hear more, please contact auction Co-Chair, Jenni Heuberger at lakptsafundraising@gmail.com.
