Distinguished Resident Alumna on a mission to improve pediatric care in the developing world
When she was a resident and a postgraduate in her native Pakistan more than three decades ago, Aziza Shad, M.D., was struck by the fact that no children in her country were surviving pediatric cancer while the U.S. survival rate was 70 percent. So she vowed to come to America in order to eventually bring life-saving medical therapies back to Pakistan and the developing world.
Today, as the director of Medstar Georgetown University Hospital's Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Blood and Marrow Transplantation and the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in Washington, DC, Shad is using her expertise to help establish programs, some of which she has pioneered at Georgetown, in developing nations around the world-including Pakistan.

Paying it Forward: grateful alumnus supports future physicians
 | Richard Geller, M.D. '77 presents the Richard W. and Marcia D. Geller Excellence Endowment scholarship to Carolyn Baloh at Convocation in September 2012. |
When his daughter Rachel graduated earlier this year from the Wake Forest School of Medicine, Richard Geller, M.D. '77, told her: "Only a few people have the privilege and right to practice medicine. You are going to touch patients physically and emotionally, and they are going to open up their hearts and souls to you."
That's the same message he has been delivering for the past 15 years to the medical students from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine (UCSM) who do their clinical rotations in his pediatric office in Norwich, Connecticut.
None of this would have been possible, says the Long Island native, without Penn State College of Medicine.

Alumni support activates seven class scholarships!
From July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013, Penn State College of Medicine alumni gave a total of $3.7 million (a 25 percent increase over last year) to support education, research, and patient care.
As part of that remarkable total, alumni support for student scholarships resulted in the activation of seven Class Scholarship endowments (Classes of '90, '94, '95, '96, '99, '00, '01). Scholarship endowments created prior to 2003 must have a book value of at least $25,000 to be activated. Thanks to alumni support, we will be able to award $13,000 more to help students this fall.
