First Herbicide Application on Hydrilla

June 13,2014

Folks,

The following is the text of an email I received from Bruce Michael, Director, Resource Assessment Service, DNR, with an update on the herbicide treatment recently performed on the Hydrilla in Deep Creek Lake:

We applied the first of five fluridone (Sonar) treatments on Deep Creek Lake on Wednesday, June 11th.  It went very smoothly.  We had 6 boats on the water - 1 for the contractor and Sonar application, 2 DCL Park Service boats, 2 NRP vessels, and 1 for our SAV crew.

About 800 pounds of fluridone where distributed over the 8 treatment areas. It took 6 hours to deploy.  Park Service, NRP and RAS staff spoke with several DCL boaters and people on the shore.  One boater was a little annoyed with NRP for making him move, and another had to wait several minutes before he could get to his slip.  We feel the impact to lake users was minimal.

We will follow up with SAV, water quality, and herbicide monitoring over the next several weeks.  Our next application date is scheduled for July 1, which may move up or back a day depending on weather.  Given that this is likely to be a busier week on the lake, we feel that we will need a similar number of boats and staff (particularly police) presence as we had for this application.

A representative from SePro, the herbicide distributor, was aboard to guide application, assess the Hydrilla and make recommendations.  From his perspective the timing of treatment was about perfect given that Hydrilla had just begun to emerge from the lake bottom.

We will continue to provide you with updated information as it becomes available from DNR.

Cheers,

Bob Hoffmann

President
