Establishment of a Deep Creek Lake Watershed Management Plan

At the State of the Lake Meeting held on July 24, 2013, at the Garrett College auditorium, Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Secretary Joe Gill announced that through partnering of his agency with Garrett County, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been established that will form the basis of a Deep Creek Lake (DCL) Watershed Management Plan (WMP) to be developed over the next year.

The purpose of the WMP is to:

  • Provide structure for resource management
  • Focus and balance interests
  • Establishment a framework for prioritizing financial resources
  • Prioritize management actions
  • Provide a venue for citizen input
  • Provide educational opportunities
  • Improve opportunities to secure funding

The planning effort will be directed by Ms. Cathy Shanks of the DNR and will begin in approximately September 2013.  A Steering Committee will be established by DNR and the County to develop the plan using a facilitated process and will include public meetings in September 2013 as well as July 2014.  Over the course of the planning period, progress will be communicated to the DCL Community.  Your POA intends to be involved in the development of the WMP.

The MOU is available for review on the Garrett County website www.garrettcounty.org.

Sincerely,

Troy Ellington
