Population Control of Resident Canada Geese

May 9, 2013
Greetings,

On 29 April 2013, the Policy and Review Board for DCL received a presentation from Mr. Paul Peditto, Director of The Maryland Wildlife & Heritage Service, concerning Canada Goose Management Options.  The PRB is working with Mr. Peditto's staff to develop a plan to manage the growing problem of these geese in and around DCL.  One aspect of this integrated plan is to treat eggs in nests to prevent them from hatching which attempts to stabilize the current population.

Mr. Peditto has put together a small, dedicated team of wildlife staff who have been steadily working nests on the public buffer and main lake areas since the day after the PRB meeting. They have surveyed the entire 65 mile surface of DCL and treated 73 eggs! They have done this in a humane way that will prevent the eggs from hatching and will continue this effort until all identified nests are treated or the eggs hatch.  It is important that we attempt to identify any nests not yet treated that are found on the buffer strip or other public land/waters in support of DNR's efforts.  Some hatching has begun so time is of the essence.

If you know of any nests on the buffer strip or on other public land/water areas, please email the locations to David Myerberg, Chairman of the PRB, at DMYERBERG@jacksonkelly.com as soon as possible so the nests/eggs may be treated if they have not been treated yet.  Thanks in advance for your support in this effort to control a growing problem.  We will disseminate additional information about other control measures when we have it.

We would like to sincerely thank Mr. Peditto of DNR and his dedicated staff on behalf of the DCL POA for their assistance in helping us deal with this problem around DCL!

Sincerely,

Troy Ellington

President
