President's Spotlight on Hunger

Dear Friends,

It is hard to believe that another year has passed and hunger is still an issue not just in every city and town in Massachusetts, but across the United States. As we look back on this past year and all that transpired, it is remarkable and humbling to witness the need. I wish others could see what we see.

Let me share a story of a small New England town that is affluent, beautiful, idyllic, but struggling with hunger.

I had the privilege of bringing a very large check to this food pantry before Christmas. They knew I was coming because I wrote to them ahead of time. When I walked in I told them I had a donation and the volunteers showed me the way to the back of the pantry where 4 of the board members were waiting. I was immediately teary upon seeing them and knowing in my heart they knew this was no ordinary donation. The women who raised these funds were extraordinary and the amount was the most we had ever donated at one time! After our initial introductions, many questions about GCI, a brief overview of who they serve, including 120 children, it is this next, unexpected, part of the story that was most surprising. Their average donation is $5 and it comes from their clients!   The clients understand that without access to this food they and their families would not have enough to make it through the month.

How do we get everyone to see what is unseeable and share what we have so we can all do our part to end hunger in 2013?  Make saving your change your New Year's Resolution and be the solution!

Wishing you all a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year!

Sincerely,

Dorothy Goodwin, President

About Gathering Change, Inc.

We are a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable organization that collects spare change from our communities for distribution back into our neighborhood food pantries and social programs. Since our first collection in October of 2008 we have been able to donate food or funds to over 46 Massachusetts food pantries.

FYI:   Most food drives are not successful due to expired donated food.  Spare change goes a long way when you consider every $1 donated is equal to $4.
