IPI Building Bridges: Planning International Conference in Colombia, September 2014

Planning began last week for the next IPI International Parking Conference, to be held in Cali, Colombia, in September 2014. Colombian-born IPI Board Chair Liliana Rambo, CAPP, accompanied IPI staff to meet with the local host committee, led by Alejandro "Alex" Jaramillo of APD de Colombia. After the planning meeting in Cali, the group traveled to the capital city of Bogotá to participate in a trade show focused on elected municipal leaders throughout Colombia. The trade show was part of a conference of mayors, called Encuentro Nacional de Municipios, hosted by the Federacion Colombiana de Muncipios, where the leaders meet to discuss many issues affecting the country's cities and townships.  A lengthy discussion involved the maintenance of current infrastructure and meeting tomorrow's transportation needs.  Keynote speakers included Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos Calderón and Transport Minister, Cecilia Alvarez-Correa.  The IPI delegation shared parking's important role in Colombia's transportation system and generated key speakers for the September Conference in Cali.

New IPI Parking Industry Award to Recognize Outstanding Marketing Programs

A new parking industry awards program established by the International Parking Institute will recognize outstanding marketing and communications programs. Judging criteria for the 2014 Parking Matters® Marketing and Communications Awards will focus on whether programs helped advance the parking profession, educate target audiences about the value of parking expertise, communicate ways to take advantage of parking and transportation options, use a parking facility more efficiently, better understand a parking technology, or otherwise create positive messaging around parking. Entries for the new awards program open March 10, 2014 and submissions are due April 21, 2014. Winners will receive a hefty trophy sporting a golden megaphone (pictured here) in a presentation at the IPI Conference & Expo in Dallas, Texas, June 1-4, 2014. Read the news release here and look for examples of the types of programs suitable for submission and details at parking.org/marcomm, or contact Lauri Chudoba at marcomm@parking.org.

IPI's Next Webinar: Data Security in the Parking Industry: Is Your Company Prepared?

Hardly a day goes by when data privacy isn't in the news.  As the use of credit cards to pay for both on- and off-street parking proliferates, businesses in the parking industry that collect payment information from customers are at increased risk of a data breach.  Further, information such as customers' license plate numbers, vehicle data, and addresses can be vulnerable in the event of a breach.  Any data beaches will attract significant media attention due to the amount of personal information collected, stored, and discarded.

Following this webinar, you will have a better understanding of:
1.  Recent history of data breaches.

2.  Data security statistics.

3.  State data security laws.

4.  Effective strategies to secure and protect sensitive data so you can be prepared in the event of a breach or other incident.

5.  Applying practical solutions to hypothetical situations arising from data use.

Instructor: Matthew H. Meade  and Jason P. Wrona are attorneys at Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC. Meade is the co-chair of the firm's Cybersecurity and Data Protection Group and Wrona represents the Public Parking Authority of Pittsburgh's legal affairs.

March 26, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. EST / 11:00 a.m. PST   (60 minutes)

Mobility Summit June 10 - 11, 2014

The two-day Innovation in Mobility Public Policy Summit will bring forward-thinking transportation professionals together in Washington, D.C., to discuss new developments in shared-use mobility and foster further collaboration between governments and private sector mobility providers. Building on the successful Shared Use Mobility Summit in San Francisco last October, this event will feature panel discussions and presentations by influential mobility leaders in the public sector along with experts in the fields of carsharing, one-way carsharing, peer-to-peer (P2P) carsharing, public bikesharing, ridesharing, and technology, all sharing their experiences in bringing new transportation options to local communities.

Hosted by the Association for Commuter Transpotation, Transit Center, Mobility Lab, and the University of California Berkeley Transportation Sustainability Research Center, summit participants will examine ways governments and shared-use providers can work together to create more seamless transportation systems within their communities and connect even more individuals to their services. The event will also examine the role of emerging technologies in shared-use mobility and how the public and private sectors can take advantage of them to reach a wider portion of the travelling public.
