Global Parking Survey Catches Eyes
The results of the Global Parking Association Leaders (GPALs) Parking Survey have gained visibility through presentations by IPI leaders at state and regional meetings, and in Mexico, Finland, Canada, and beyond.  The survey, which was translated into five languages and taken by parking professionals in more than 13 countries, has also generated publicity in trade publications such as Buildings magazine, Government Buyer, EDC: The Magazine of the LEED Professional.  See the research presentation here, and the article that appeared in The Parking Professional here. See a list of all participating associations here, and welcome to the French Parking Association, GPALs' newest addition. A few new projects will soon be underway and the next meeting of GPALs will be June 1, 2014 in Dallas in conjunction with the 2014 IPI Conference & Expo.

IPI Supports Mexican Parking Industry

2013 IPI International Parking Conference - Mexico

On Oct. 28 and 29, more than 100 participants convened in Mexico City to Re-Think Parking. Eighteen exhibiting companies vied for attendees' attention in between key topics of discussion including why Parking Matters®, parking trends and technology, operations, and on-street parking management. A vibrant and collaborative roundtable ended the official programming and a tour of the Antara Fashion Mall in Polanco proved it to have the cleanest underground parking facility some of us had ever experienced! IPI would like to thank our six Alliance Partners for their support in making our third Latin American-focused conference another success. Our sponsors were: Platinum: Toledo Ticket Company; Gold: 3M Mexico, Digital Printing Systems, HUB Parking Technology; and, Silver: CI Boletos SA de CV, Magnetic Automation Corp.

Smart Parking Alliance: Municipal Outreach Planned

2014 is gearing up to be the year of IPI's Smart Parking Alliance (SPA), a committee of companies providing equipment, products, and services to the parking industry working in tandem to support the Parking Matters® program.  Those who are signed up will get the full scoop -- and learn of volunteer opportunities -- in a new, dedicated SPA newsletter due out next month. A major project in the works, and headed by Co-chairs David Cummins, Xerox and Laurens Eckelboom, Parkmobile International, is a market research study among city managers and decision makers to be conducted in collaboration with American City and County magazine. If the municipality sector is important to you, mark your calendars now for a first-ever municipality pre-conference of the 2014 IPI Conference & Expo in Dallas to be held Sunday, June 1. More soon.

Time Sensitive: Tools You Can Use to Get Positive Press on Holiday Parking

Want to get a template news release with tips for holiday parking that you can send to your local media? It's IPI's annual consumer news release, and we've tailored it (for members only) and made it easy for you to insert the name of your organization, city, or association. We're even providing a link to a service you can use to acquire a ready-to-go media list (nominal cost, based on number of media listings, which you can pare down or up at your discretion). Interested? Send an email to Jean Miller and she'll be sure you're on the distribution list.

IPI's Next Webinar is Tomorrow: Parking Behaviors in a Smartphone Society

This webinar explores how the rise of smartphones and other mobile devices is changing consumer behavior and expectations around parking, and discusses ways parking professionals can use mobile technology to meet these evolving needs. Most importantly, it discusses how mobile solutions connect to your organization's specific strategic objectives. It will give you the knowledge to decide which types of mobile technology make sense for your organization, and which don't.

After participating in this webinar you will be able to:

  1. Understand the effect of mobile technology on consumer parking behaviors.
  2. Evaluate mobile parking solutions as they relate to your organization's needs and objectives.
  3. Incorporate mobile-based initiatives and opportunities into your organizational strategy.

The Parking Professional: Media Masters

How one municipality used its lessons on dealing with the media to ensure positive coverage in the papers.

Twenty-five years ago, I was studying to receive my bachelor's degree in broadcasting from Eastern Kentucky University, and all I thought about was producing music videos. That was back in the '80s, when MTV was in its heyday; I also had a lot more hair and played bass in a Christian rock band. I never dreamed of being in front of the camera, and certainly never dreamed of being a parking professional.

Fast-forward to January 2008: I was attending IPI's Certified Administrator of Public Parking (CAPP) two-day seminar called, "You're On!-How the Media Gets Your Message," and was just as nervous as the rest of the class. Doing mock interviews in front of a TV camera with a very bright light in my face or being grilled about a make-believe parking facility disaster in a mock radio interview wasn't easy, but it was great practice! Little did I know that only months later, I would be asked difficult questions by local reporters when we rolled out the LEXPARK program, which included not only new technology but a 400 percent rate increase for on-street parking in Lexington, Ky.

To see how it all turned out, read the rest of article by Gary Means, CAPP, and the entire November issue of The Parking Professional.
