IPI Launches New Online Training
Training your parking staff just got a whole lot easier. Today, IPI launches the first five online training courses in what will be an expanding list of courses. The self-paced courses take between 60 to 90 minutes to complete and are priced between $49 and $69 for members; $69 to $89 for non-members. The courses include knowledge checks and quizzes and learners earn a certificate upon completion. Current online courses include conflict resolution, customer service, enforcement, parking technology, and on-street parking management. More courses are in the pipeline and will be available soon. Read the news release here. Go directly to the online courses and training center here.  For organizations wishing to train entire staffs, vouchers for free courses are available. For more information, contact Lauri Chudoba

GPALs Summit in Ireland: IPI Parking Trends Survey Goes Global
International initiatives are hallmarks of IPI Chair Liliana Rambo's, CAPP, term, as evident in the leap IPI has taken with the Global Parking Association Leaders (GPALs) Summit. Established by IPI in 2012, GPALs Summit is an annual gathering of parking association leaders from around the world. The group's first collaborative project, a global parking study based on IPI's annual Emerging Trends in Parking Survey, was conducted this past summer among 13 participating countries with results that showed countries are more in sync on parking on many issues than might have been predicted. The results of the survey was discussed at a GPALs meeting held last week during the EPA Congress in Dublin, Ireland. Shawn Conrad, CAE, IPI executive director, led the meeting and former IPI Chair and board member Cindy Campbell presented the research, along with former Chair Casey Jones, CAPP. Learn more about GPALs, read a news release issued today, and download a pdf of survey results here.

Parking Matters® in Mass Transit Magazine

Parking Matters logo RegisteredWhat parking options and services should transit agencies consider to encourage the use of public transportation? That's the question asked by Mass Transit Magazine, read by more than 22,000 executives in the mass transit industry, and answered by IPI Chair Liliana Rambo, CAPP, and IPI members Dennis Burns, CAPP and Soumya Dey, PE. Read their answers here.

IPI Helps 1,000 Teens in Richmond, VA Park Better During AAA Event

"Start your Engines" is the call to action for 1,000 teens who are participating in a special "I Drive" event today and tomorrow sponsored by AAA Mid-Atlantic and the Mid-Atlantic Foundation for Safety and Education. It's a highly-interactive driver education event held at the Richmond International Raceway in Richmond, Va. and airing live on CBS "Virginia This Morning" on Wednesday. For the first time, thanks to a joint project between the AAA organizations and IPI, teens will receive copies of How to Park: A Must-read Manual for Teen Drivers, developed as part of IPI's Parking Matters® initiative.

This informative guide can be downloaded here and also customized with your logo and distributed as part of a community relations effort to your constituents.  IPI member Mississippi State University did just that recently for incoming students. Contact Henry Wallmeyer for more information.

Park(ing) Day is Friday
Once a year, Park(ing) Day transforms on-street parking spaces into parks (See the August issue of The Parking Professional for more). This year, the International Parking Institute is joining the masses. On Friday, September 20, IPI will celebrate Park(ing) Day in Arlington, Va., where we'll transform a parking space into a welcoming park. We'll offer passers by the opportunity to sit down and enjoy the "greener" street and learn about parking and why Parking Matters®.  Follow IPI's social media outlets on Friday to see how ours and other Park(ing) Day events are going, and look for a follow up on the Parking Matters® Blog. If you are participating in Park(ing) Day, submit your photos to Kim Fernandez, editor, The Parking Professional, and keep an eye out for them in a future issue of the magazine.

Nissan and Green Parking Council Offering Subsidy for Electric Vehicle Fast Charger Installation

Nissan and the Green Parking Council (GPC), an affiliate of the International Parking Institute, have teamed up to promote the expansion of DC - quick charging for electric vehicles.  The auto original equipment manufacturer and the sustainable parking evangelist are partnering to subsidize the price for parking owners and operators looking to take the lead on fast charging.  The commercialization of DC - quick charging, which allows a near-full charge in less than 30 minutes, has opened the door for this next-generation infrastructure.  Garages and lots open to the public and in busy locations are key targets for this opportunity.  For more information, contact Paul Wessel at  203.672.5889. This is a time-limited project, so please reach out ASAP.

The Parking Professional: Cracking Down

In the September issue of The Parking Professional, Kim Fernandez takes a look at how researchers and cities are taking an interest in finding solutions for the skyrocketing abuse of disabled parking.

Monitor news about parking and you'll get an alert just about every day that has to do with the abuse of spaces reserved for those using disabled driver permits. It's no wonder: experts say that the dawn of affordable professional-quality home printing and scanning mean it's easier than ever to forge or alter permits. And an economy that continues to struggle makes free on-street parking for disabled drivers a hotter commodity than ever, which means more people are willing to risk penalties on the off-chance they're caught using an invalid permit. Parking industry members and governments aren't the only ones looking at the issue either; academia is taking a keen interest in disabled parking abuse as well.

IPI members can read the full article here as well as the rest of the September issue.
