The Parking Professional: Tips from a Parking Judge to Make Tickets Stick

The November issue of The Parking Professional offers great advice on making parking tickets stick that you can share with your front-line staff members:

TPP November Cover

Having written a book about how to beat parking tickets and sat as a judge who decided such cases, it's somewhat amusing to be approached by "the enemy" to pen an article about how to make parking tickets stick. The truth is that the overwhelming majority of parking tickets already do stick; that is, the vast majority of people-even those with good defenses-never bother to fight their tickets at all. And of those who do fight, a huge proportion are found guilty by the judge. So I have to chuckle when I consider what advice to give to further stack the odds against people getting tickets. But having taken the task, I'll boil it down to one simple rule: don't make mistakes.

IPI Members can read all the tips and the rest of the November issue by accessing the online version of The Parking Professional.

Q&A Transcript from IPI's Webinar, Uncovering the Perks of Public Policy for Parking

IPI's October webinar covered the contents of the Federal Highway Administration's Contemporary Approaches to Parking Pricing: A Primer, projects funded by FHWA, and opportunities for parking professionals to make the most of this public policy initiative. It also included first-hand accounts from panelists who have implemented performance pricing in their operations.

Q:How does SFpark message the dynamic pricing to the parker?

A: Jay Primus: SFpark has demand-responsive rates, which means rates change according to demand about every six weeks, rather than dynamic rate adjustments which implies much more frequent rate changes. This periodicity was deliberate, giving regular parkers in an area more time to learn new prices and make any adjustments to their behavior they may make before measuring again for the next rate change. Rate information is displayed on the meter, online, via SFpark mobile applications, and is available as part of the free JSON/REST data feed that other application developers can use and help distribute.

IPI members can access the full Q&A transcript here and anyone can access the archived version of the webinar as well as the Contemporary Approaches to Parking Pricing: A Primer.
