Congratulations to Melvin Monette!
Voted "President-Elect" to NIEA
|
The American Indian Graduate Center (AIGC) would like to congratulate the National Indian Education Association (NIEA) on another event-full annual convention and trade show in Rapid City, SD, this past weekend. Special congratulations to Melvin Monette, Director for Graduate and Fellowships and Special Programs, at AIGC; voted "President-Elect" to NIEA to assume Presidency at the NIEA Convention in Alaska next October! "Melvin has been with AIGC just over three years. In this short period, he has advanced our scholarship processes; enabling students to apply online, helped launch a new website and productively engaged national organizations relevant to the organization's mission. We are proud of his newly elected position with NIEA and support him as he advocates for the betterment of education for all Native students," said Sam Deloria, Director of AIGC. Melvin Monette stated, "I would like to thank AIGC for their support. Not all my college preparation and transitional experiences were what they could be; therefore, throughout most of my professional career I set out to give personal attention to each student and family who requests it of me. I have learned that higher education, while it propels an individual, carries a family and community through and beyond the educational experience. Through my own personal experiences in education and my career, I realize we all have much more work to do to truly call ourselves or our communities lifelong learners. I enjoy serving on the NIEA Board of Directors because I know it impacts our Native communities." Melvin is a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians and an alumnus of the University of North Dakota.
AIGC is proud to say that over the years, and currently, many of the NIEA Board of Directors members have been funded through or were affiliated with AIGC.
Other members of the 2013-2014 Board of Directors include:
Pamela Agoyo (Cochiti, Kewa, Ohkay Owingeh), President Dr. Charlotte Davidson (Dine, Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara), Vice-President Dr. Teresa Haunani Makuakane-Drechsel (Native Hawaiian), Treasurer Dr. Robin Minthorn (Kiowa, Apache, Nez Perce, Umatilla), Secretary Corey Still (Cherokee/United Keetoowah Band), Parliamentarian Dr. Timothy Begay (Navajo) Dr. David Beaulieu (Minnesota Chipppewa) Daphne Little Bear (Santa Ana Pueblo) Mary Kim Titla (San Carlos Apache) Ryan Wilson (Tituwan Oceti Sakowin) Ronalda Warito-Tome (Navajo)
