Jackie Bengry, Childcare Director

On Wednesday, June 11, at 9:30 a.m., Child Care director Jackie Bengry and her staff will host the fourth annual Membership Appreciation Brunch in honor of Liberty's parents. "This provides us with a time," Jackie explained, "to sit down and tell our parents how much we appreciate them and how much we love taking care of their children."

While Liberty's adult members enjoy their workout regimens at the front of the club, do you ever wonder what our little members are doing at the Tree House Activity Center in the back of the club? According to Jackie, they're experiencing their own special regimen.

"Most of our kids come at the same time every week, and they like the regularity of that," Jackie shared. "Many come straight from dropping off an older brother or sister at school, so they think of the Tree House as their preschool. Some of them also think I live here, and they call it 'Jackie's house'!"

"We want them to feel like they belong from the moment they arrive," she continued, "so we greet them by name and take pride in remembering what they enjoyed doing the last time they were here."

Personally greeting an average of 500 children per week, with upwards of 100 per day during the summer, is no small task. But Jackie and her staff relish the challenge. They keep the same toys and play stations in the same place, every day, because the children are comfortable and thrive with familiarity, pattern and routine.

According to Jackie, the "non-walkers" like the vibrating chairs that play music and the "walkers" like anything that plays music, especially the barn door! The two and three-year-olds enjoy lining up the Smurfs, Spider-Man, the Chipmunks and the princess figures in a very specific order. And the older children like to play dress-up, work at the craft table and jump in the ball pit.                                   .

Hiring a great staff contributes to Jackie's recipe for success. Each Child Care employee has a minimum of two interviews. "I use the second interview," Jackie shared, "to see how they relate to kids." "They have to love children, and children have to love them. They have to be kid magnets. I can train the rest."

Is there any wonder that Jackie and her child loving team organize and run the most highly attended event at Liberty, the annual Easter egg hunt? Twelve staff members in an organized assembly line fill 5,000 eggs, in just one and a half hours. The eggs are then hidden in the grass, next to the Outdoor Water Park, where Liberty's children enjoy hunting for eggs, participating in games and activities and meeting the Easter bunny. It is an understatement to say a great time is had by all.

Is there also any wonder that Jackie and her child loving team are hosting a Membership Appreciation Brunch for Liberty's parents? The Tree House staff loves Liberty's children, and Liberty's children love the Tree House staff. Reciprocity in its purest form ...

Gardening Hazards: How to Prevent Them
By Sue Licher

Gardening is relaxing and gratifying, but there are still things to watch out for. Here's a rundown of common gardening hazards, along with some tips to help you avoid them:

  • Stretch before you start work. Backs, shoulders, arms, and hands get the brunt of the abuse from tilling the soil all day. A good routine of stretching exercises before you begin will help to get your muscles ready and prevent serious injury.
  • Use proper lifting, squatting, and reaching techniques. When lifting from the ground, start from a squatting position and bend from the knees. If you're lifting from a truck bed, brace yourself against the bumper and try to get as close to the object you're moving as possible. Many gardeners also suffer sore knees from constant kneeling and lifting, so a good pair of kneepads or a portable foam pad you can move from place to place are a must.
  • Rotate your tasks to give different muscle groups a rest, switching positions at least every 15 minutes. Know your physical limitations and when you should ask for help or use a wagon or cart.
  • For heavier jobs that involve backhoes, augers, and other digging and trenching devices, get the proper training and follow safe operating procedures. US Consumer Product Safety Commission statistics show that some 230,000 people receive emergency room treatment each year from being injured by lawn and garden tools.

Pool Safety Reminders life ring
Please remember children 8 years and under must be supervised at the outdoor waterpark.  The lifeguards are working hard to maintain a safe environment and are diligent in responding to children having difficulty in the water. We want everyone to have fun and enjoy the pools, however we must ask that all parents and supervisors maintain a close eye on their children.
When the Liberty Lagoon is not life-guarded, children need to be 15 years of age or older to be without adult supervision   Please make sure your children are not using these areas if they are not of the proper age.

The indoor adult lap pool is for lap swimming only. Children under the age of 15 must be accompanied by a parent or supervisor while swimming laps. Children under the age of 15 may be asked to move to the Lagoon if the adult lap pool is busy.

Please review these policies with your children, as they are in place for your child's

Shedding Light on Sunscreen sunscreen bottle

If you think you understand the ins and outs of sunscreen, you may want to think again.

An American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) online survey found that many people are confused about SPF numbers and how to use sunscreen correctly.

  • Only 18% of respondents knew a sunscreen with SPF 30 does not provide twice the protection of an SPF 15. The difference of protection between SPF 15 and SPF 30 is 5%.
  • Only 28% of respondents who said they sometimes or always use sunscreen reapplied sunscreen every two hours.

Research also indicates that most people only apply 25% to 50% of the recommended amount of sunscreen (one ounce for the entire body, or enough to fill a shot glass).

With SPF this and UV that, understanding which sunscreen products to buy and use can be tricky. Before you lather up, learn what you need to use so you don't get burned.

According to the AAD, use only those sunscreen products that offer:

  • Broad-spectrum coverage (label may read "broad spectrum," "protects against UVA/UVB," or "UVA/UVB protection")
  • SPF of 30 or higher
  • Water resistance

The AAD also recommends:

  • Reapplying sunscreen every two hours when outdoors
  • Finding shade whenever your shadow appears to be shorter than you are
  • Wearing protective clothing, including long sleeves, pants, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses
