This Week - Sunday, June 29, 2014
This Sunday - Worship 10:30 a.m.

June 29: Scott Ward. "The Chaplain's Road." Halfway through my studies with the Saint James College Seminary to become a certified Chaplain and member of the Association of Professional Chaplains, I find myself with more questions than answers about how we humans deal with illness, sorrow and difficulties. I invite you to come hear my essay trying to describe my journey as to quote Henri Nouwen, a "Wounded Healer."

This Sunday - Adult Forum
9:30 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. in Room 25

June 29: Adult Forum is viewing and discussing the video "The Necessity of Virtue," a workshop from the 2010 General Assembly. Unitarian Universalism recognizes neither salvation by grace nor by faith, but by character. Facilitator: Jim Davis

Next Sunday - Worship 10:30 a.m.

July 6: Rev. Libby Smith. "On Being Religious." Many people find Unitarian Universalistm after feeling disappointed or hurt by other religions. Our members may like to define themselves as "spiritual, but not religious." And yet we are a religion, one with centuries of history and tradition that inform who we are today. What does it mean to be "religious" as a Unitarian Universalist? And why does it matter?

Next Sunday - Adult Forum
9:30 a.m. - 10:15 a.m.

July 6: Jim Davis facilitates a discussion on some aspect of Religion & Ethics Newsweekly, which explores world events from the perspective of world religions.

Delaware Coastal Zone Act Celebrationcoastal zone sunset

Join Delaware environmental organizations in celebrating the 43rd "birthday" of Delaware's landmark environmental legislation, which was signed into law by Governor and First U member Russell Peterson on June 28th, 1971!

The celebration of the Coastal Zone Act begins with a kickoff press conference on Friday, June 27 at 1:30 p.m. at the very appropriate Russell Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge; directly after the press conference there will be a free film screening. Throughout the weekend the celebration continues with outdoor activities in the Coastal Zone (the 2 miles inland and off Delaware's coast that hold some of Delaware's most valuable and threatened areas) and screenings of acclaimed Delaware filmmaker Michael Oates' documentary, An Evolving Legacy: Delaware's Coastal Zone Act around the state.

Dynamic Pizza Party sponsored by

Independent Living for Young Adults

At the High School Graduation Pizza Party on June 12th, not only was there celebration and acknowledgement but also some serious and telling conversations. These young men and women, who aged out of foster care when they turned 18 didn't know each other before the party, but they connected through their shared experiences. Sharing ideas and knowledge about resources is not only information sharing but an opportunity to gain a sense of contributing something of value to others.

Representatives from three state agencies attended and offered high praise for the support that Independent Living for Young Adults provides these young people. To be recognized by these agencies to the extent that they are present at a party is a huge reinforcement that ILYA is on the right track. They talked to the grads about furthering their education and not just academically. A good point was made that well-paid jobs are available in trades that are highly sought after in our country... machinists, welders, fabricators and others are needed. Hopefully, these conversations will inspire someone who may not see themselves as "college material" but who can excel going down an alternative and equally important path.

To learn more about ILYA and how you can offer your support, please contact Betty Wier at  [email protected] or JHarry Feldman at  [email protected]  or 302-654-0681.

The season of branches and blooms has arrived, and many of us have gardens blazing with color. As in the past, we are hoping that our members and friends will share their gardens with us for display at Sunday services. You may clip and construct your own arrangement, then bring it in on Sunday morning. Or contact Suzie Cornell at [email protected]; (610) 925-0510 and she will arrange a time to stop by and collect flowers from your garden. We look forward to many glorious displays in our sanctuary!

Help Support the Work of the Church When You Shop!

Every time you purchase Booster Cards you support the operating budget of the church. And, you spend no more than you would usually spend for items you need every day, like gas, medicine, and food. The church purchases Booster Cards at a discount, and sells them to you at face value. Did you know that if 100 church households bought just one $100 grocery booster card each week, we would raise an additional $26,000 each year for our operational expenses? WOW!

Most grocery store cards yield 5% of their value as profit to the church. Other vendors offer even higher percentages. Buying Booster Cards can have meaningful impact on all the work of our congregation. Stop by the Booster Card table after the service, or come by the church office during the week and buy some soon!

Camping in the Grove

Does your child love to play games?

Do they love to swim in the summer?
Do they love to create?

Do they love to hang out with friends their age?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, and your child will be going into grades 4 to 7 in September, it sounds like they are ready for a magical UU experience! Gear up and get ready for Murray Grove's very own UU children's sleepover camp: "Camping in the Grove." Spots are filling up for the Aug. 10-14 camp. For more information on "Camping in the Grove," or to register, click here.

Thank you to all our volunteers!
