This Week, May 19, 2013
This Sunday - Worship 10:30 a.m.
May 19: Rev. Dr. Joshua Snyder. "Walking Together." The great historian Conrad Wright said that Unitarian Universalism means "walking together" through the grand spiritual journey of life. On this morning of our Annual Meeting, let us reflect together on the role of the church in our lives and as a source for good in our community.
This Sunday - Adult Forum
9:30 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. in Room 25
May 19: Adult Forum continues the 12-session series on Making the New Testament by Professor Bart Ehrman. The history of the epistles and gospels that did and did not make it into today's bible will be covered. Facilitator: Jim Davis

Next Week, May 26, 2013
Next Sunday's Service - 10:30 a.m.
May 26: Rev. Dr. Joshua Snyder. "No Greater Love." Memorial Day is about remembering the men and women of the military who died in service to their country. Self-sacrifice is not an act we talk about most of the time, but for one day out of the year we remember those who did it.
Next Sunday - Adult Forum
9:30 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. in Room 25
May 26: Adult Forum continues the 12-session series on Making the New Testament by Professor Bart Ehrman. The history of the epistles and gospels that did and did not make it into today's bible will be covered. Facilitator: Jim Davis

Vote on the 2013-14 Budget on Sunday
As you know from the meeting held April 14, as well as articles from our Stewardship Team on the progress of our annual pledge drive, our projected pledge income is less than we had hoped for. Our pledge goal was $560,000 and our projection for pledges for next year is $502,500. (As of April 29, 2013) This is about $60,000 short of our pledge goal, and $40,000 less than the pledge commitments we have on file for the current fiscal year. Such a significant shortfall requires difficult decisions. The Executive Team has crafted a budget which impacts staff and program budgets, but which allows us to maintain effective church operations during FY 13/14, as we develop our long range strategic plan and craft a staffing plan designed to support the goals of that plan. Some major changes include: - Our Honorary Minister of Music position has been changed from a full time position to three-quarter time.
- The church's contribution to employees' retirement plans has been reduced. All staff participants in the pension plan will receive contributions of 5% of their earnings beginning July 1, 2013. Currently ministers receive 10%, and lay staff receives 8%.
- All employees who participate in our health insurance plan will receive premium coverage only for the UUA Health Plan High Deductible Plan (80% for the employee, and 50% for dependents). If employees wish to remain on the UUA Health Plan Standard PPO, they will need to pay for the additional premium cost above the rate for the High Deductible plan. Currently, employees may choose which plan to use, and receive the percentage of premium coverage (80% employee, 50% dependents) for either.
- Professional expenses have been significantly reduced, overall cut by $8,500 over our approved budget in May 2012.
- Program budgets have also been reduced. Our largest program budgets, Music and Children's Religious Exploration, have been reduced to 70% of their budgets from the approved budget in May 2012
- Additional cuts have been made across many areas of the budget.
This is a difficult budget year and difficult choices need to be made. Thank you to the members of the congregation who attended our Budget Reconciliation meeting on May 5. We appreciated everyone's thoughts and ideas. Please attend the Annual Meeting on May 19, right after church, to vote on the budget for next fiscal year. |

Independent Living for Young Adults
High school graduation - many of us take for granted that our children and grandchildren will all have one and then move on to the next stage - often, college. But for youth in foster care graduation isn't common and frequently is nothing short of astounding. With little to no stability, support or resources, many never make it. But this year, in New Castle County, 30 youth will graduate (up from 18 last year and 12 the year before), including two college grads! They have shown incredible determination and fortitude and we need your help to recognize and celebrate their accomplishments.
ILYA is once again sponsoring a pizza party for these youth - who age out of foster care at 18 - to celebrate their graduations. We also give each a backpack filled with items to set up his or her own place or take off to college. A gift card is included for the grad to buy a need or a treat.
We are delighted that so many are reaching the important educational goal of graduation but the increase in numbers means that we need extra help from our church members. Please, contact Barbara Perry at perryba@hotmail.com or (302) 475-7929 or stop by the ILYA table on Sunday morning to offer to shop, stuff backpacks, or donate money for the gifts or pizza party. It's a great way to show these brave young people who have no supportive family that there are people who care about them as they transition to the next phase of their lives.
Please, consider what that would mean to one of your family members if they were trying to make it on his or her own and give what you can (time, money, effort) to make this a joyful celebration for these deserving young people.

Pet Lovers!
It's not too late! You can add a picture of your favorite pet to the Pet Lover's Art Show in the Upstairs Gallery.
The show will be up all summer, so please drop off a picture of your favorite pet, framed, or unframed in the church office. Don't forget to put your name, and the name of your pet with the picture. See Scott Ward for more details.

Did you take our survey?
How well is our church fulfilling its mission of being a beloved community that nourishes minds and spirits, fights injustice, and transforms the world through loving action? We would love your help in finding out! Please click here to take our congregational survey. Seventy-two people have responded so far - be sure your voice is heard too!
In addition, we would like parents and guardians to take a short survey to help us learn about your children's experiences at church. Please click here. And for youth who would like to take the survey themselves, follow this link to a short survey for them.
All survey participants will receive a secret code for a thank you prize that can be redeemed at church.
Thank you for sharing your experiences with First Unitarian! Your input helps plan the future work of the church.

Thank you for your generosity!
We received $590.75 for the May 12, 2013 special collection for A Center for Relational Living and their Second Chances Program, which helps, formerly incarcerated people to reenter society and avoid recidivism. Thank you for your generosity! |
Call for Monthly Special Collections
Our new fiscal year begins July 1, and it's not too early to think about what charities and church related social action projects you would like to nominate for one of our monthly special collections. Each month, on the 2nd Sunday, we give our offering to organizations, both in our church and in the outside community. Is there a group that holds a special place in your heart? Send your nomination to marina@firstuuwilm.org with your name, charity contact info, and a brief summary of the work they do by May 31, 2013. The Executive Team will evaluate the nominees and will contact you to let you know if your submission has been approved. The following Special Collections are "pre-approved" and included as part of the budget: Emmanuel Dining Room, Grants for Growth, Independent Living for Young Adults and the Faith Center. |
Summer Day of Mindfulness Retreat

Did you buy your Booster Cards this week?
Booster Cards help fund the operations of the church. What are Booster Cards? The church buys gift cards from a variety of merchants at a discount, then we sell them to you at face value. The profit goes directly to our operating budget. You support the church when you shop for things you need, but at no additional cost to you.
In difficult times you may find you can't pledge as much as you used to. Booster Cards can help solve that problem for you!
Each year, we earn about $5,000 in profit selling booster cards, but we have the potential to earn so much more if more members used them for their everyday purchases. Did you know that if you bought just one $100 grocery gift card each week for a year, you could increase your financial support to the church by $260! If 100 families did this, we would have $26,000 in additional church income. You are buying groceries anyway, why not use Booster Cards to support the church at the same time?
We have many merchants to choose from, including Acme, Rite Aid and iTunes. Please stop by the table at coffee hour, or come by the church office during the week and buy Booster Cards!
