New Tasting Room Policy:  Children

As many of you know, Fabbioli Cellars welcomes your entire family when you visit! We enjoy hosting guests of all ages, but regretfully we have had recent incidences of near-accidents with children in the Tasting Room.  Since safety is always our biggest priority, we no longer allow children to sit at the tasting tables.  Until we find a better solution, children are welcome to wait for parents who are tasting as long as they are under the supervision of an adult. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work to find the right solution in keeping all of our guests safe while they enjoy our premises.

Here's a Great Idea!

Dear Fabbioli Family and Friends,
Recently, I was fortunate to be invited to a collaborative brew day with 14 beer brewers from Loudoun county. (Our hops were used in some of this beer for the "dry hop" process.) I had some great conversations with numerous brewers about hop growing and the similarities between brewing beer and making wine. The most thought provoking conversations for me were about our growing industries and how we need to monitor our growth.

As alcoholic beverage producers, we need to recognize that as flavorful, artistic and enjoyable as our products are, alcohol can be an addictive and sometimes abused substance. As the popularity of the wineries, distilleries, breweries and cideries increase, we want to promote responsibility among our customers and fellow businesses.

To that end, some things the businesses do on a small scale are training our staff to remain diligent to prevent underage drinking as well as over consumption, having a designated driver program, serving snacks or food to balance the alcohol, and planning and booking events that are more based on education than consumption. On a grander scale, we actively promote other businesses and activities as additional venue options in the region. Farm tours, antique stores, public parks, restaurants and roadside stands complement the experience of the country winery or brewery visit.

In Loudoun County last month, we had a well respected county supervisor resign his position due to his challenges with alcohol consumption. It is a loss for many, including himself and his family. As our industry grows, we cannot deny our challenges and need to keep focused on our responsibility to the community.

This has been a community service message; have a nice day.

Cellar Notes - by Meaghan Tardif

We are in the middle of harvest now and things have been hopping! Just last week we brought in about half of what we expect to for the entire season.  We brought in Viognier, Zinfandel, and Merlot from California and harvested our Tannat, Carmenere, and Merlot from our estate.

We have also received our Cabernet Franc from Southern Virginia and Tannat from Loudoun County.  By the time this newsletter gets to you we will have harvested our Chardonnay and Chambourcin as well.

Everything ripened around the same time this year, so processing has been a real juggling act!

The grapes must be destemmed and sorted, fermentations started and completed, and the juices pressed off in time so we can clear some bin space and receive the next fruit to start all over again.  Come visit us this month and enjoy the fruits of the harvest season!

Wine of the Month: by Laurel Ford

laurel

Earthy, rich, and full of flavor, nothing says fall like Fabblioli Cellars' 2011 Tannat. This full-bodied red has a deep burgundy color and complex layers of aromas and flavors. Scents of plums and raspberries fill the glass as the wine opens with trails of spice, smoke and leather. As the wine lingers in the mouth, robust flavors of pomegranate, plum, and vanilla come through with a warm lingering finish, making it an ideal wine for the month of October.

Historically, the Tannat grape has been grown in southwest France and used mostly for blending.  Over the past decade though, it has gained popularity with Virginia vintners and wine lovers. As of 2014, 14 of the 250 wineries grow Tannat and offer it as a single varietal. Only 20 Virginia acres have been planted, but it has generated several award-winning wines. One of them is our 2011 Tannat. This vintage earned a gold medal and placed in the Governor's Cup Case at the 2014 Virginia Governor's Cup Wine Competition. With the Tannat grapes' rising status and exposure, many vineyards are starting to plant more, to the benefit of us all!

As the days become crisper, share a bottle of the 2011 Tannat by a crackling fire with family and friends.  The richness and depth of Tannat is approachable paired with dishes like orange-thyme lamb or beef stew with butternut squash, or as an elegant accompaniment paired with Filet Mignon.  What ever you are serving, Tannat will set the stage nicely for your next harvest party. Whether today or tonight, make it Tannat!
