Going Paperless
Is it time for a paperless home?

Paper has a way of piling up in our homes. The junk mail, magazines, bills and statements arrive daily.  Is it time to cut the clutter and make it all go away?

A paperless home might sound a little scary, but there are some definite advantages and environmental benefits. Each year Americans' mailboxes receive approximately 41 pounds to their homes! That's a lot of paper that ends up in landfills. And that doesn't even include the mail you actually look it. Imagine having statements and bills sent electronically (via email). The de-cluttering could begin immediately.

But what about all those old statements that take up space in filing cabinets? Marc often jokes that his mother-in-law still has her utility bills dating back to the 70's. You don't need to save those. For the most, part, you can dump the vast majority of old statements in the recycle bin.  But there are a few that need to be saved (either in paper or electronic form) click here for how long you should be saving all your document

Securing Your Devices
Avoid being the victim of a scam.

Thieves are getting savvier and as a result you need to constantly beware. Many of these scams will play on your fears and lack of understanding of how your devices work.

Make sure you are up to date on all your software, those updates while annoying are usually necessary and are your best source of protection. Be sure you are also backing up your data regularly and on an external device, that way if someone does lock your computer you can restore it easily.

Remember most reputable companies won't solicit you. If you are solicited by someone claiming to be from a major company, call them back on their official customer service telephone number or visit their official website, get the real story direct from the horse's mouth!

Do You Know How Much Your Spouse Makes?
Communication among couples is critical to mastering a financial balance.

In a 2015 Fidelity survey, 40% of participants didn't know their spouse's annual salary. Some 60% of those surveyed had no idea what the other was entitled to receive in Social Security benefits. Finally one-third of those surveyed couldn't agree on how well-off they'd be in retirement.

These numbers are troubling. It is critical that couples share in the task of managing household finances and money management. Ideally, you both should share in your long and short term goals and know what is coming in and going out of your household! Each of you should have specific responsibilities. Finally you want to able to lean on each other for help & understanding, and know when you're in over your head. At Freedman Financial we regularly help couples talk through the tough questions and get them both on the same financial page.
