GIVE. ADVOCATE. VOLUNTEER.

April 2013

We know, as we get ready to send out this newsletter, that many hearts are heavy. We've witnessed senseless violence and tragedy around our country, including that in Boston and Texas; however, at the same time we find strength in seeing countless acts of courage.

We thank you for all you do to make this such a caring and supportive community through United Way and in your daily lives.  Your volunteerism and donations to United Way go a long way in promoting lasting change in the areas of Education, Income and Health, and we appreciate you for that.

What are your thoughts about "charity"?

To watch Dan Pallotta's presentation, skip to the 8 minute mark. This video is brand new and will be online for a limited time.
___________

Dan Pallotta presented at this week's United Way Worldwide Staff Leaders conference, at which several of our staff are in attendance. This video is from this conference and is based his TED Talk which, if you don't already know, is where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the "talk of their lives" in 18 minutes (or less).

We are sharing this video with you as a way to rattle our collective thinking and expectations around the work that nonprofits do and that we invest in. How can we rise up to be greater, bolder and more impactful?  As budgets get cut, and demands on nonprofits grow, could this be the message for our age?  Let us know your reactions and thoughts - we'd love to hear what you get out of this.
HOTSHEET: What's Going On @UWABC

Focus Area Volunteers have finished reviewing funding applications individually and have begun meeting to discuss each program and determine funding recommendations.

On April 16-19, Ann Von Brock, Kevin Montgomery and Vicki Lloyd headed to the United Way Worldwide Staff Leaders Conference in Indianapolis. Vicki Lloyd, Director of Marketing and Communications, represented United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County by giving the presentation "An Embedded Community Initiative" on our two-year process of embedding our Middle School Success initiative throughout the work of each department in our organization.

Our very own 2-1-1 Director, Rachael Nygaard serves as board president for NCAIRS, an affiliate of AIRS (Alliance of Information and Referral Systems). NCAIRS is partnering with NCAOA (NC Association on Aging) to host a statewide conference April 17-19, at which Rachael will be leading a number of workshops and convening the NCAIRS annual meeting.

_______________

Gina Gallo, our Middle School Success Director, will be attending and presenting at the NC Center for Afterschool Program SYNERGY conference April 15-17 in Raleigh.  Gina's presentation, "Community Partnerships that Benefit Everyone", will focus on how community collaborations (like our Middle School Success initiative) can help programs avoid duplication of services, increase impact and visibility, and acquire additional resources.

Hands On Asheville-Buncombe is busy engaging groups of volunteers in April: 130 Belk employees will volunteer in projects to benefit three local schools as they celebrate their 125th Anniversary with 125 Days of Service.

Hands On also engaged the members of Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UNC-Asheville in a group volunteer project to benefit Mountain Area Child and Family Center's Rainbow In My Tummy program.  Are you a business looking to engage employees in service?  If so, contact Michelle Bennett about Hands On managed group projects.

The CarePartners Spring Fling 5K and Fun Run/Walk will be held on April 21 at Carrier Park to benefit United Way.
Runners may dress in "Spring Fling" formal wear with sneakers or regular running clothes.

In light of this week's tragedy, runners are also encouraged to wear blue or yellow - the colors of the Boston Marathon - and race organizers will hand out blue and yellow ribbons for runners to wear in honor of those hurt, injured or killed on Monday.

Check in is at 2 p.m. and the race starts at 3 p.m. It's $25 for ages 15 and older, $30 day of race; $10 ages 7-14, $15 day of race; fun run is $10 for all ages. Registration can be done online or on the day of the race.

Advocate.
A lot is happening nationally and in our state, but the NC General Assembly is especially active.  Issues such as Medicaid Expansion, tax reform, and many others will impact our area.  We encourage all to be/get involved, and United Way makes it easy to connect with legislators and learn about issues on our advocacy page.
Volunteer.
Belk Volunteer, David West didn't let his scheduled conference call keep him from being a great community volunteer. Talk about multi-tasking!

Thank you to Belk and their employees for letting us help them celebrate 125 years in business, with 125 days of service.
