Bill to Stop Sex-Selective Abortion Introduced in Assembly

SACRAMENTO, CA - April 3, 2014 - Assemblymember Shannon Grove (R-Bakersfield) has introduced AB 2336, which would prohibit a person from performing an abortion if they have knowledge that the pregnant woman is seeking the abortion on account of the gender of the unborn child. Upon introducing the bill, Grove stated, "I hope that women across California, regardless of political beliefs, will join me in condemning this attack upon girls."
California ProLife Council, the state affiliate of the National Right to Life Committee, recently came out in support of the bill--also known as Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act or PRENDA--and of Grove's oversight to see it pass with bi-partisan support. Anissa Gallegos-Smith, spokeswoman for California ProLife Council, said in a statement on Tuesday, that "Sex-selective abortions are happening in California. There are practices now banned in India that are allowed to take place here."
Because of the nature of the issue, high-profile political leaders have started vocalizing their frustrations with sex-selective abortion's inherent contradictions. The most recent instance being former President Jimmy Carter's appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman on Monday, March 24, 2014, where he called sex-selective abortion the "the worst human rights abuse on earth."
"I'll start with the worst statistic that I know," Carter continued, "and that is that a 160 million girls are missing from the face of the earth because they were murdered at birth by their parents or either selectively aborted when the parents find out that the fetus is a girl."
AB 2336 will be going to the Assembly Committee on Health in the coming weeks and advocates of the bill are rallying for bi-partisan support. "We urge legislators of both parties to stand against this callous and despicable act of killing a girl simply because she is a girl," says Gallegos-Smith, "If Jimmy Carter and Hillary Clinton can condemn this, then every public official, regardless of party should step forward to address this injustice."
