Sharing a Vision and Taking Action

In January, LJS will guide Unid@s Cohort II through a participatory Action Planning process developed by the Institute of Cultural Affairs. After identifying a shared vision for Latin@s in the state of Oregon cohort members will implement their plan. We are looking forward to seeing their vision become a reality.

National Laboratory

Continues to Strengthen Focus on

Diversity & Inclusion

Nanci and Associate, Kathleen Rice, continue their work with a national laboratory to strengthen their Diversity & Inclusion initiatives. At the end of January, LJS will mark the mid-way point in a 2 year Division-wide D&I action plan. Quarterly gatherings support the laboratory to evaluate their progress and determine next steps to achieve group-identified milestones.

In February, the Division will hold their sixth three-day Transformational Communication Off-site training at the San Damiano Retreat Center in Danville, California. Look for highlights from the event in our March newsletter!

Advancing Social and

Economic Equity in Portland, OR

In February Luna Jiménez Seminars will provide training for district managers, staff, community volunteers, and stakeholders of the nine districts that are part of the Neighborhood Prosperity Initiative and Main Street Program with the Portland Development Commission (PDC). As the economic development and urban renewal agency for the City of Portland PDC is committed to ensuring their "strategic goals, outcomes, programs and initiatives advance social and economic equity." LJS will continue to work with these programs through July to develop heart-centered Equity Strategies.

A Different Kind of Healthcare

Health Leads, currently located in six cities, partners with hospitals and community health centers to address racial and economic disparities in the health care system. When a person seeks medical attention, Health Leads Advocates provide resources for non-medical factors (food, heat, etc.) that also impact a person's health. Nanci and Associate, Stephanie González, are working closely with Health Leads' Talent Director, Jenny Milnor, to further develop their Diversity & Inclusion initiatives.

Connecting Latino Leaders for Change

The second cohort of Unid@s for Oregon, the multigenerational  Latino leadership program, kicked off their program at the University of Oregon in October. Latino Network's Unid@s for Oregon, strives to build a leadership framework that fosters cohesion, trust and relationships among leading individuals and organizations.

Associates Lillian Roybal Rose and Stephanie González are working alongside Nanci Luna Jiménez on the Unid@s project. The goal is to advance the wellbeing of Latinos through a unified statewide voice and presence in all levels of leadership.

As one participant shared, "What an honor to be part of this prestigious program. It was a powerful seminar that created a strong foundation of life long connections with all the participants and facilitators. Thank you for providing us the tools to heal as individuals and as a community!" This cohort graduates in May 2014. Stay tuned for announcement when nominations for Cohort III open!

Healing Together

Lillian and Nanci flew to Green Bay to lead a two-day Transformational Communication workshop for  Wise Women Gathering Place (WWGP) on October 31-November 1. WWGP co-founders Alice Skenandore and Bev Scow first experienced this workshop three years ago. These dynamic leaders used everything they learned to deepen their mission of peace, respect and belonging through skill building, sharing of  knowledge and caring support for their community in Wisconsin. And they were ready for more!

Nanci and Lillian were both touched by the healing space created by WWGP and the depth of work done by a courageous, authentic group of participants. One attendee commented: "You carry a torch of flaming insight-thank you Nanci and Lillian! Your work and your presence inspire me."

Conversation and Participants Transformed!

The Wisconsin Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Statewide Conference, Transform the Conversation: Explore. Expand. Create. was held in the Dells on November 5-6. Nanci's keynote, entitled "Transform the Conversation, Transform Our Community, Transform Ourselves," guided participants to explore the root causes of male domination that perpetuate emotional, physical, sexual and economic violence in an environment of fear. She also asked key questions to help shift our language and perspective from "victims," "survivors," and "advocacy" to a narrative of empowerment, dignity, ally-partnerships, and human liberation.

A participant expressed, "I loved Nanci Luna Jiménez and her keynote. It made me consider my role in this movement in relation to the extensive history. The way she encouraged us to re-frame privilege and consider what those with privilege lose as a result was very powerful."
