What Have You Inherited?: Inside The Tent With Isaac, Rebecca, Esau and Jacob

"A story is typically told: In the moment of transmitting the authority of his traditions to his chosen heir, Isaac is duped by a conspiring wife and son. Not so fast. Come learn what the text might actually convey.
Read Genesis 27 before class. Slowly."

*Sunday, September 18th
Pirkei Avot: Ancient Ethics of the Jewish Sages
(For A World Unsettled By Free Will)

"Absorb ancient ethical guidance, ripening on the vine of human experience for a few thousand years. Wisdom structured as simple axioms, proven in the complexities of day-to-day response to the ways and needs of our neighbors. In the current season of ethical murk, come remember the clarities of your own purposes in this world."

Skeptics & Suds Is Back!

What is Skeptics and Suds?
Christians commonly believe certain claims that are taken, by many, to be historical facts. Perhaps the best example is that Jesus died on a Friday but came back to life sometime before the following Sunday morning. And, in fact, we hear from the Apostle Paul that if Jesus was not "resurrected," then faith means nothing. But what if we, in 21st Century America, came to wonder about the historical accuracy of these claims? What if we came to believe that the "literal truth" of these claims was in conflict with other basic things we think we know about the world? Would that mean that we couldn't be Christians? Would that mean that we couldn't find in Christianity a Truth more powerful than one that takes these stories to be historically accurate? Would that mean we would have no place in the community of Christ?

This is the conversation we've been having for the past two years at Skeptics & Suds, a monthly reading and discussion group exploring these and other concerns about "literal belief." This season, we will be focused on John Shelby Spong's 2007 book Jesus for the Non-Religious. Spong is a retired Bishop of Newark in the Episcopal Church, and is a leader in the movement to reclaim Jesus from literalist thought.

When do we meet?:
2nd Monday of each month (Starting September 12th), from 7-8:30PM
Where do we meet?
The bar "Dive" in Sea Bright
Who should come?
Everyone - whether literal believer, atheist, anything else - that would like to take part in this discussion about how to reconcile Christian faith and Skepticism. A desire to drink beer is not a requirement, though you are welcome to do so here...
How to prepare?  Get a copy of Jesus for the Non-Religious
You can buy it on Amazon, or get a copy from Jeff Roy. You can also get a copy by coming to our first meeting. If you are able to do so, read the Preface and the first Chapter (Introduction) before 9/12 - through Page 14 - though that's not essential.
