Backpack and School Supplies Collectionbackpack-sm.jpg

Foster and Adoptive Services (FAFS)

August 10th through September 13th

We are starting our annual collection of backpacks and school supplies for donation to Foster and Adoptive Services. Any school supplies would be greatly appreciated (backpacks, pencils, markers, notebooks, rulers, erasers, crayons, etc.). There are sales currently at Staples, Target, Walmart on back to school items.

Last year over 70 backpacks filled with school supplies were collected. The children who received these were thrilled! Containers will be set up in Ralph Hall for you to drop off supplies. The backpacks will be brought to the altar and blessed on

Sunday, September 13th.

If you are interested, GROUPON is having a special on fully supplied backpacks for 29.99. CLICK HERE for the link.

Foster and Adoptive Services is headquartered in Monmouth Junction. They are the leading statewide advocacy agency for foster and adoptive parents. They provide support, training and advocacy to meet the special needs of foster, adoptive and kinship families, who provide safe, stable and nurturing homes for children in foster care.

FAFS' Backpack Program was born from the images of children being removed from their homes for reasons of abuse or neglect with their belongings placed in trash bags. Today, when caring people like you donate backpacks, they are given to children in foster care by their foster parents as a gift to welcome foster children into the foster home.

The Canterbury Art Show:Can You Help?
As in years past, the art show takes place down the cloister walkway and in Ralph Hall. If you've been in the church leading up to the art show, you can't help noticing the black metal grids lining the walls and set up in Ralph Hall. We need a few able-bodied men to help us move the grids from the storage facility in Red Bank to the church.

Here's the schedule: We meet at St. G's on Sat, Aug 15, 9AM, go in tandem vehicles to Red Bank where we meet up with Calvin and the rental truck, load the grids, return to church, and unload. You will be finished by 11! (The procedure is reversed on Sat. Sept 12th).

Come for the fun, the fellowship, the workout, and the satisfaction of knowing you are making a difference!

Please volunteer to help by contacting the church office or a committee chair: Coni Lefferts, Beth Sherrard,
Denise Weiner, or Maggie Raynor.

Another Canterbury Art Show Artist:
Blake Reuter
"Highlands Sea Bridge 2005"

"Winston Churchill once said that there is nothing he enjoyed more than an afternoon of painting. I figured that if Winston Churchill could find time to paint then so could I. And I agree, working on a painting is a source of great enjoyment.

I like to experiment with different approaches and subject matter in my painting. I've created both real and abstract paintings and particularly favor semi-abstract works. I work exclusively in acrylics for several reasons with the primary one being versatility. For drawing I like to use chalk pastels and Conte crayons. My favorite artist is Franz Marc from the Blue Rider German abstract expressionist movement active in the early twentieth century.

As a former resident of Sea Bright, and frequent summer visitor, I enjoy painting scenes from Sea Bright. There is a wealth of subject matter, including ocean, beaches, rivers, marshes, dune grass, bridges, laughing gulls and on and on. My painting entered in the Canterbury art show is titled, Highlands Sea Bridge 2005. This acrylic painting, which is done in Pointillism style, was created from a photograph taken along the Shrewsbury River where the old Something Fishy restaurant was located. The composition is decidedly vertical with horizontal intersections from the bridge and the small waves in the water. This bridge was demolished in 2009 in favor of the current one." ---Blake Reuter

Pledges during the Summer

Please remember your pledges to

St. George's this summer.
It would be great if we can avoid the usual summer cash flow crunch.
Thank you in advance!
