You Helped Us Reach Our Goal!

Thank you to everyone who made a donation as part of our 2016 Matching Gift Challenge during the month of September! We are excited to announce that we reached our goal of $25,000 and that the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (Habitat LA) Catholic Coalition will generously match this amount dollar for dollar. This means that together we will be able to help more low-income families build strength, stability and independence through homeownership.

30 Years of Building with Bank of America

In celebration of Bank of America's 30 year commitment to Habitat for Humanity they put together a video featuring Habitat LA homeowner Amanda Jordan. Amanda Jordan and her three kids live in Lynwood and this piece shares how Habitat and Bank of America empowered her through homeownership. The home has provided a place of strength and stability for her entire family to thrive. 9-11 Interfaith Build Day
Representatives from the Hindu, Buddhist, Islamic, Christian and Jewish faith traditions gathered on a Habitat LA build site in Montebello on the 15th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks. Habitat LA hosts this annual build day as a way to honor the victims and heroes of 9-11 through service.

Volunteers hung drywall and nailed siding with the common goal of helping to build four Habitat homes, as well as a stable and inclusive community. Swami Mahayoganada of the Vedanta Society of Southern California commented that this day was a "harmony of religions" helping us to realize that the aspects of faith that pull us apart are trivial compared to those that bring us together, like Habitat, to break down barriers and institute meaningful change.

Our interfaith work encompasses the same spirit of humility and cooperation that was shown in the wake of 9-11. If you are interested in learning more about Habitat LA's Interfaith Initiative, please contact Jordan Markovic, Habitat LA Faith Relations Manager, at 424-246-3652 or jmarkovic@habitatla.org

Delta Build 2016
Construction is underway on the Trejo family home that we are building in partnership with Delta Air Lines! This is the first of five homes that we will be building together in the City of Los Angeles.

The Trejo's are a family of four currently living in a one-bedroom apartment. Delta Air Lines employees are volunteering alongside the Trejo's Wednesday through Friday to help build their home in just six weeks! Other builds are also taking place this fall in Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis-St. Paul, New York City and Seattle.

Both Habitat LA and Delta are committed to serving and strengthening the City of Los Angeles. We are looking forward to honoring Delta on October 13th at our Los Angeles Builders Ball™ with our Foundation Builder award.

Support Habitat for Humanity California

You can help build a better California by supporting Habitat for Humanity California with your state tax return. This year's tax season is almost over with an October 15th deadline for taxpayers who requested a six-month extension. If you are filing between now and October 15th, please consider designating a contribution to the "Habitat for Humanity Fund" in box #428. A voluntary contribution is an election made by the taxpayer to designate a portion or all of their tax return to charitable funds. Click HERE to learn more. Thank you for your support!

Volunteer Corner

We recently welcomed Tom Kafka to our growing team of volunteer crew leaders! Habitat  LA crew leaders are skilled volunteers who participate on our build sites several times each month. When we asked Tom why he was inspired to go through our crew leader training program he said,"I got involved with Habitat because I'm good at making things and it seemed like a logical thing to do when I retired."

Habitat LA homes are built almost entirely by volunteers and our crew leaders play an important role in ensuring that everyone who comes out to volunteer is able to complete their construction tasks safely and efficiently, while also having fun. We currently have many opportunities to volunteer on our construction sites. Sign up HERE.

In addition to volunteering to build homes, volunteers can also sign up to assist with our special events. You can learn more about these opportunities HERE
