Save the Date - 2016 Hollywood Build

Happy Spring! Habitat LA celebrated some exciting milestones this March! On March 11th we raised the walls for one of three homes we are building in Inglewood, California, thanks to a generous gift from Thrivent Financial. And just this week, we held a celebration in partnership with Culver City to announce the construction of ten new homes on Globe Avenue. We are looking forward to a busy season ahead, thanks to all of our partners who are coming together to help Build a Greater Los Angeles!

The Hollywood History Behind the Castañeda Family's Habitat LA Home

Not many families can say that Dustin Hoffman helped to build their home. The Castañedas are one of the few families who can. The two-time Academy Award winner worked alongside the Castañedas during a Hollywood for Habitat for Humanity blitz build in 2000. In just one week, 20 homes were completed in Wilmington, California. Yolanda Castañeda House was just 20-years-old at the time, but remembers this experience well. Even 16 years later, the build brings back fond memories, especially of her late father. Yolanda now lives in North Carolina with her own family, but when she comes home to visit her mother, she is always reminded of the passion and determination of her father in his quest to make a better life for his family. Thrivent Financial Partners with Habitat LA on 12th and 13th Homes

On March 11th, Habitat LA held a kickoff and wall-raising to celebrate the 12th and 13th homes in greater Los Angeles being built through our partnership with Thrivent Financial. This year, Thrivent Financial has committed $225,000 to help build two homes in Inglewood, California. In addition, Christian churches from across greater Los Angeles will provide volunteer support and help raise an additional $45,000 towards the construction costs. Over the last 11 years, Thrivent Financial has contributed more than $1.9 million towards the construction of affordable homes in our community. Thank you, Thrivent Financial, for helping make homeownership a reality for 13 low-income families since 2006.
Construction in LA and ReStore Donations on the Rise

LA's real estate market is hot once again and homeowners, as well as investors, are renovating at a rapid rate. Home renovations and deconstructions provide an excellent way for you to support Habitat LA's ReStores while reducing waste.

The ReStore is a home improvement thrift store that accepts reusable materials such as windows, doors, lighting fixtures, hardware, appliances, kitchen cabinets, vanities and even the kitchen sink! We also accept surplus building materials like pallets of pavers, tile, molding, dry wall and wood. Since 2004, the Habitat LA ReStores have diverted more than eight million pounds of reusable materials from local landfills. Help Habitat LA Build a Greater Los Angeles by shopping and donating to the ReStore. Find ReStore locations and hours HERE.

Culver City Kickoff

Habitat LA and Culver City have partnered together to build the city's first affordable homeownership development. A kickoff celebrating this partnership was held on March 31st with Mayor Micheál O'Leary, City Council members, and many other project supporters.

"We are excited to work with Culver City on this new development," says Habitat LA President and CEO Erin Rank. "There are many hardworking families and individuals in this area that will benefit from this partnership. We also have many ways for local residents, businesses and community organizations to support this project by donating funds, promoting homeownership opportunities, and coming out to volunteer." Mayor O'Leary added, "I want to thank the Habitat LA team for working in partnership with Culver City to make this long-awaited kickoff a reality! In just a few short months, these lots will be transformed into homes owned by the working families who participated in their construction. Culver City looks forward to welcoming new residents to our city and all it has to offer!"
