NEWSLETTER
NOVEMBER 2015

As we enter the holiday season we are thankful for many things in our lives. At Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (Habitat LA), our work reminds us daily of the many blessings that homeownership provides. This year we are thankful for you, for people who are kind in times of darkness and for everyone who is working to make our world a decent place to live.

LOS ANGELES BUILDERS BALL RAISES MORE THAN $800,000!

On October 14th more than 700 Habitat LA supporters gathered at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel for the 2015 Los Angeles Builders Ball. The evening was an incredible celebration of our 25th Anniversary and the launch of our Building a Greater Los Angeles campaign. More than $800,000 was raised, which will support our commitment to invest $100 million into the transformation of communities throughout Los Angeles over the next five years.

We were proud to honor Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Bernards and Bank of America for their incredible contributions to our city and Habitat LA. We also announced lead campaign gifts of $750,000 from Delta Air Lines and $250,000 from Bank of America.

The Los Angeles Builders Ball™ was attended by celebrities and notables including: Earvin "Magic" Johnson and wife Cookie, Jeffrey Osborne, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Tommy Davidson, Tina Knowles Lawson, Shaun Robinson, Taylor Armstrong (RHOBH), Kate Linder (Y&R), Glynn Turman (House of Lies), Kiki Shepard (Showtime at the Apollo), Art Evans (Soldiers Story), Byron Scott (LA Lakers Head coach), Gary Vitti (LA Lakers trainer), A.C. Green (retired NBA), Dawnn Lewis (Better Call Saul), Tracy Hutson (Extreme Home Makeover), Alex McLeod (Trading Spaces), Khleo Thomas (Walking Tall), Christina Wren (Man of Steel), Caroline Barry (10 Days In A Madhouse - The Nellie Bly Story) and Diana Madison (TV host and blogger) among others.

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Our fall building season has been busy with the start of construction on new homes in the cities of Montebello and Inglewood. Partnership Housing, the City of Montebello and Habitat LA recently broke ground on two duplexes that will bring four affordable homeownership opportunities to the city. In Inglewood, we began building three homes with the help of more than 100 volunteers on Veterans Day.

We also dedicated four homes and celebrated the families who will be having their first holiday in their new home. The dedication of the Green family's home in Long Beach was the perfect way to spend World Habitat Day, a day devoted to recognizing everyone's right to adequate shelter. On October 22nd, the Bernal family received the keys to their home which was sponsored and built by Thrivent Financial and a coalition of Christian churches. The Leal family dedication took place on October 28th with Delta Air Lines who sponsored the home and whose employees built it in six weeks! We also recently kicked off the season of gratitude with the Loza family dedication on Nov. 21st. Thank you to Thrivent Financial, Grifols, Nissan and the Heisman Trophy Trust for helping us welcome this very special family home! VETERANS BUILD

More than 100 veterans, active military and volunteers spent their Veterans Day helping to build three Habitat LA homes in the City of Inglewood. One of these homes is being designated for a Veteran homebuyer.

The Veterans Build honored and thanked the brave men and women who serve and protect our country at home and abroad. The build also highlighted Habitat LA's veteran outreach initiative, Habitat for Heroes, which was established in 2011 to create affordable housing solutions and volunteer opportunities for veterans, active military and their families. To date, more than 4,000 veterans have volunteered and more than 60 veterans have been served through home repairs or homeownership opportunities.

We are grateful for the media outlets who covered the day as well as the support of our event sponsors: The Albertsons Companies Foundation and The Vons Foundation, Mercury Insurance, American Business Bank and Turner Construction.   For more information about Habitat for Heroes, click HERE.

SUPPORT HABITAT FOR HUMANITY CALIFORNIA

Help build a better California by supporting Habitat for Humanity California with your California State Tax Return. There are more than 100,000 non-profits in California and Habitat for Humanity is one of 20 that you can donate to by designating a contribution in box number 428 next to "Habitat for Humanity Fund." A voluntary contribution is an election made by the taxpayer to designate a portion or all of their tax return to charitable funds.

To donate on your tax return:
1) Find the Voluntary Contributions list on your 540 CA tax return form. When filing online, you will be asked if you would like to contribute a portion of your return to a California fund.

2) Find box #428 "Habitat for Humanity Fund"

3) Simply designate how much you would like to donate and help us build homes and hope in California!

Tax return contributions go directly to the Habitat for Humanity Fund of California. Please spread the word and discuss with your accountant or financial adviser!

HYP LA KICKOFF
In September 2015, Habitat LA's Young Professionals (HYP LA) held a kickoff event at Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill at the Grove.  This fun-filled evening included networking opportunities and a raffle which raised over $850 for Habitat's programs!  Guests also heard inspiring words from our Board Chair, Dan Burgner, and partner homeowner, DeLois Jacobs, who shared her transformational homeownership story.

A big thank you to our friends at Blue Ribbon Sushi for hosting our kickoff by not only providing incredible hospitality but also delicious food and drinks!

You can view photos from the evening HERE. If you are a young professional looking to get involved with Habitat LA, please contact Helen Dosta, Associate Director of Development, at hdosta@habitatla.org.
