	  | | NEWSLETTER | SEPTEMBER 2015 | |
 |
We had a great summer of building here at Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (Habitat LA)! New projects are in full swing and others have come to a close, which means we were able to welcome new partner homebuyers into the Habitat LA family.    Every time we break ground on a new home or have a home dedication, I am reminded of the incredibly generous gifts of time and funds that come together to make an impact on families and communities. We have a busy Fall ahead as we continue to celebrate our 25th Anniversary, so please join us at an upcoming build or event! |
 |
  LOS ANGELES BUILDERS BALL   | | |
We will host our Los Angeles Builders Ball on Wednesday, October 14 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. This year's event marks our 25th Anniversary and will honor Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Bank of America and Bernards for their commitment to transforming neighborhoods across greater Los Angeles. We will celebrate with a special performance by Jeffrey Osborne. Individual tickets and tables are available for purchase HERE . All event proceeds will help Habitat LA revitalize distressed communities throughout Los Angeles and provide hope for families currently living in substandard housing. For more information, email events@habitatla.org or click HERE . |

  MAGNOLIA AVE. HOME DEDICATION   | | |
Construction on a seven home development in the City of Lynwood began during our Hollywood for Habitat for Humanity Build-A-Thon in November of 2013. Since then, the site has been host to many special build days and the most exciting of them all was our dedication celebration on August 29th.
We were joined by sponsors, volunteers, Senator Isadore Hall III, Assemblymember Anthony Rendon, Mayor Jose Luis Solache as well as representatives from the City of Lynwood and the Office of Congresswoman Hahn. A highlight of the event was having leaders from different faith traditions come together to bless the site and families.

Most importantly these seven partner families were welcomed home: The Hernandez Family The Magana Family The Payton Family The Ramirez Family The Rendon Family The Renteria Family The Tan Family
The building of this seven home development would not have been possible without the following lead supporters: JCPenney Cares City of Lynwood The Catholic Coalition The Gary D. Magness Foundation Grifols Wells Fargo Vons

 | | | | GMC's DIY challenge, in partnership with This Old House, recently tasked Southern California based DIY influencers with creating one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture using only salvaged materials! Three do-it-yourself experts - Dinah Wulf from DIY Inspired, Timothy Dahl from Charles & Hudson and Brad Pennington from DoItYourself.com - did an amazing job picking out materials from our Torrance ReStore and crafting them into new pieces.
Kathryn O'Shea Evans, design expert and staff editor at This Old House, was the host and judge. She was joined by our ReStore's very own, Karen Moore, for the judging portion of the competition.

We are so thankful to GMC for this fun opportunity and to the GM Foundation for helping to build and sponsor one of our homes in South LA that will feature the finished furniture pieces!

CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY ON NEW MODEL FOR AFFORDABLE HOME!
 | | | We officially kicked off construction on a new home being built in partnership with Los Angeles County 2nd District, Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), General Motors Foundation and Bernards!
The backdrop for our kickoff celebration was the first walls of a three-bedroom home that is progressive in both design and building materials.
Our collaboration with SCI-Arc began with the idea for students to gain real-world experience designing and building an affordable home. During the fall semester students designed the home, then completed the documentation process during the spring semester and have been working with Habitat LA staff, Bernards and volunteers this summer to help with the home's construction.
This project would not be possible without the support and contributions of the LA County Community Development Commission, the Office of LA County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas and The GM Foundation.
We are all looking forward to the finished product and seeing a veteran partner family enjoy this home for many years to come. Read more about this project HERE. |
