Thank you to all of our supporters who came out to the opening of our third ReStore in Bellflower on 9/20. Mayor Sonny Santa Ines of Bellflower joined Habitat LA President/CEO, Erin Rank, for the ribbon cutting and several Habitat LA board members stopped by throughout the day. Shoppers enjoyed recycling services, refreshments from Pepsi, three food trucks and music from The Sound. One lucky customer even won an outdoor KitchenAid BBQ island. You can still visit any of our three ReStore locations for your chance to win! Tickets are $5 a piece or $10 for three tickets. Only 1000 raffle tickets will be sold for each grill. A winner will be drawn the day after the 1000th ticket is sold.

THE HOME DEPOT FOUNDATION'S CELEBRATION OF SERVICE
| |
Over the last two weeks, Habitat LA had the opportunity to host more than three dozen volunteers from local The Home Depot stores during their annual Celebration of Service program. On September 24 and 25, Team Depot members worked on soon-to-be Habitat LA homeowner and veteran Roxana Gomez's home in Long Beach. Team Depot spent two hot days digging up the yard, rebuilding a cedar fence and installing a drought tolerant landscape.
One week later, Team Depot returned to Long Beach, this time to help retired Sergeant David Lowe and his family restore his yard by digging up all of the parkway and covering it with mulch, as well as tearing down a rotted fence and several gates. In its place is now a beautiful expanse of cedar fencing. Sergeant Lowe and his wife, Maria, and son, David Jr., were out working in the blazing sun with us, and were so grateful for the help! Sgt. Lowe estimated that the move to a drought tolerant landscape will save his family nearly $150/ month on his monthly water bill.
A big and sincere thank you to the amazing Team Depot volunteers from the following stores: Carson, Compton, Gardena, Hawthorne, Lakewood, Long Beach and Torrance. Thank you for helping to serve some amazing local veterans!

9/11 NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE AND REMEMBRANCE
|
Habitat LA commemorated the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance with a series of very special build days.
Halley Burnett, daughter of Tom Burnett, who was one of the "Let's roll" heroes of hijacked United flight 93 built alongside veterans and active military on 9/10. Click HERE to see photos.
Volunteers from faiths such as Baha'i, Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic, Jewish, Sikh, Catholics, Protestant and Latter Day Saints came out to build 9/11-9/13. Click HERE to see photos.
On 9/25 lawyers and employees from
Holland & Knight's LA offices volunteered as a way of commemorating 9/11 and honoring a Holland & Knight attorney who was killed in the attacks.
"The week was filled with inspiration and heartfelt emotion," said Erin Rank, president/CEO of Habitat LA. "At a time when we remember those we lost 13 years ago, its wonderful that our mission can bring together those who serve as well as diverse faith and spiritual traditions to build hope and homes for families in need." In September, Habitat LA celebrated the official takeoff of the fourth home here in greater Los Angeles to be built in partnership with Delta Air Lines.
This year we are rehabilitating a two bedroom, one bathroom home on a 3,400 sq foot lot for future partner homebuyer, Alex Hernandez. He is a music teacher in a low-income community who is also working on his master's degree in educational administration.
Since the takeoff, teams of 20 Delta Air Lines employees are volunteering with us Wednesday through Saturday to get this home completed. Time flies when you're working with Delta Air Lines and we are already looking forward to dedicating this home on October 30th! Click HERE to view all the photos.

WORLD HABITAT DAY
| |
On Monday, October 6, Habitat LA participated in World Habitat Day. This day is observed annually to draw attention to the basic right of all humanity to adequate shelter.
Habitat LA encouraged grassroots action with a series of guest blog posts and a Twitter chat. We wrapped up the day in the most perfect way by visiting the homes of some of our recent partner families during intimate home dedications. One of the families we visited was the Chanto's and Mr. Chanto's words below pull on our heartstrings and remind us why affordable housing matters.
As you read Mr. Chanto's words below please know that they are not only intended for Habitat LA staff, they are also intended for you - our Habitat LA supporters!
"After we realized that in this life we would never be able to afford a home no matter how hard we had tried, Habitat LA turned our family's hopelessness around. Habitat For Humanity changed our destiny. Now I am a homeowner. I have a place called "HOME" for my family. Habitat for Humanity not only makes my lifetime dream come true, it also changes so many things in our lives. I can't say how much I am happy, but I can say I am happy to live, enjoy my life every day. I feel I have much more confidence, feel bigger inside than before...in short, Habitat LA restored most of me lost before and changes me to become a new person that happily and bravely is moving forward for the rest of life. I believe what my family and I feel right now is the same as so many other families do. My family and I would like to thank you so much for Habitat for Humanity and its people for what you have done to my family, other families, communities and our country. My family and I will never forget you for the rest of our lives. May God bless Habitat for Humanity, its people and missions!"

LEGACY GIFTS: BUILDING THE HOMES OF TOMORROW
| |
Article by: Jennifer Wise, VP of Resource Development, Habitat LA
The Restore has a new location, adjacent to our main offices on Artesia Blvd. in the City of Bellflower. We have lots of space and great items for sale. The ReStore saves our customers money on ordinary items as well as those special, "one-of-a-kind" must have useful pieces. Most importantly, it helps us to build homes. A few weeks ago I was rummaging through the ReStore looking for items I could use at my home and I met a couple who told me that they make a regular habit of shopping at the ReStore. They have been shopping our ReStores for years knowing that it was a way in which they could support Habitat LA's programs. As we talked, they mentioned that they wished that they could do more. I suggested that contributions can be made in all sizes and many different ways, including gifts that provide income to our donors. They were eager to learn more about that so I directed them to our planned gifts web page at http://habitatla.plannedgiving.org/. Here our donors are introduced to a variety of ways in which a legacy gift can ensure that Habitat LA continues to provide affordable homes for hardworking families and individuals for generations to come.
For more information in confidence and without obligation, contact Jennifer M. Wise, Vice President of Resource Development, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles, 8739 Artesia Blvd., Bellflower, CA 90706, or call (424) 246-3627, or Email [email protected].
