Summer is moving quickly, largely because July has been another busy month for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (Habitat LA). We enjoyed coming together with the Catholic community to launch our first Catholic Build, visiting partner families to welcome them into their homes and even volunteering at the Vons "Stuff A Truck" event. We invite you to enjoy some of your summer with us at one of our build sites or in our ReStores!

NEIGHBORHOOD STABILIZATION PROGRAM HOME DEDICATIONS

The Urrutia Family
At Habitat LA, home dedications are celebrations where we share memories and gratitude for all of the hard work it takes to build each of our homes. Home dedications take many forms. Sometimes they are big celebrations and other times, like our recent family home dedications, they are more intimate.
We have been fortunate to visit some of our more recent partner homeowners in their beautiful homes to offer a blessing and bring them a Bible and flowers. One of the families we visited this month, the Urrutia's, sent us this heartfelt note below after our visit.
Thanks to God, that we cross paths with people at Habitat and learned that there is an opportunity to own our own house. Thanks to God and Habitat that they are helping the communities. We wish God to continue to bless you for all your work to help us.
Thank you,
Familia Urrutia Equihua

The kickoff of Habitat LA's inaugural Catholic Build took place on Saturday, July 19 at our Magnolia Ave. site in Lynwood, CA. Parishioners and friends gathered to learn more about the newly formed Catholic Coalition. The Coalition has committed to raising $150,000 - the cost of a full house sponsorship - as well as building the home during planned build days throughout this summer and into spring 2015.
The Catholic Coalition is made up of local Catholic churches and organizations. To date, they have raised $65,000 and garnered the support of Archbishop Gomez of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Church groups or related organizations that are interested in getting involved can do so in a number of ways.

Vons is a great partner to Habitat LA and we were happy to support their Feed SoCal hunger initiative. During difficult economic times, one out of every six people in Southern California experiences food insecurity. Collectively Habitat LA staff donated 80 bags of groceries and some also volunteered at one of the "Stuff A Truck" events hosted by ABC7 and Vons!

BANK OF AMERICA STUDENT LEADERS

Roxana Sanchez
Roxana Sanchez and Neemat Abdusemed are two great interns that came to us through the Bank of America Student Leaders Program. Both young ladies recently blogged about their experience working with Habitat LA. Read an excerpt from Roxana's blog below.
"The first thing that I learned when coming to Habitat LA was that everything has an acronym and I mean EVERYTHING. Whether it's a department like EMC (Entertainment, Marketing and Communications) or events such as PWPT (Power Women Power Tools) or HFHFH (Hollywood for Habitat for Humanity) to simple things like RE (Raiser's Edge-an organizational database) people here at Habitat LA have created their own language of acronyms, and it works!
During my time here I have gotten to experience a little bit of everything. I have gotten to shadow different department heads, gone out with the trucks all day and helped them pick up ReStore donations all over Los Angeles, and of course gone out to a build site to help frame a Habitat home.
I have been truly inspired by Habitat's employees and volunteers alike. What everyone has in common is passion. I have witnessed how hard employees work. People wear many different hats outside of their role, and they wear them gracefully."

VOLUNTEERS DOING MORE

By Jennifer Wise, VP of Resource Development, Habitat LA
A few months ago I was working on a build site with a group of volunteers that included John and Mary, a retired couple. They have been Habitat LA volunteers for more than 20 years. As we were framing walls, they shared with me their desire to do more to ensure that hardworking, low-income families have a decent home. They brought up that one way to do this would be to leave a legacy gift to Habitat LA. I suggested that they talk with their accountant about making future gifts using non-cash assets such as appreciated securities, or talking with their attorney about adding a provision in their will for Habitat LA. Mary nudged John and commented, "You know, I think the kids can live just as well inheriting 95% of our estate instead of 100%!"
As you can see, there are many different ways to make a gift to Habitat LA. A legacy gift will help Habitat LA to continue making affordable homeownership opportunities available well into the future.
We would like to offer you a complimentary copy of our brochure, "What You Need to Know About Wills." For more information, please call me at (424) 246-3627 or e-mail me at jwise@habitatla.org.
