NEWSLETTER
APRIL 2014

Spring has sprung! We've enjoyed soaking up the sun at some very fun build days and events this past month. Read below about our Volunteer Appreciation event, Singles Build Day and more! Also, be sure to check out a few of the many ways you can get involved!

LA CIENEGA DESIGN QUARTER: LEGENDS

We are honored to again be the beneficiary of LEGENDS, a celebration of design hosted by the La Cienega Design Quarter that is taking place May 7-9, 2014. This year's LEGENDS theme is Novel Interiors:Storytelling by Design. The highly anticipated design event will bring together VIPs and tastemakers for three days of receptions, keynote panel discussions, cocktail parties, exhibitions, book signings, personal appearances and special events. You can purchase VIP passes HERE. All proceeds from the VIP passes directly benefit Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA) and will help us to serve more hardworking, low-income families in greater Los Angeles.

THE HOME DEPOT FOUNDATION GRANT

HFH GLA is thrilled to be the recipient of a $300,000 grant from The Home Depot Foundation. The grant will be used to provide critical home repairs to 25 low-income veteran homeowners and their families through our Critical Home Repair for Veterans program. This program has been successful because of the generosity of The Home Depot Foundation along with several other companies, individuals and faith communities.

Ensuring that veterans have safe homes is one very important way that HFH GLA is serving this population.

There are many veterans in greater Los Angeles who need our help! If you'd like to make a contribution to support our Critical Home Repair for Veterans program, please contact VP of Development Jennifer Wise at jwise@habitatla.org or mail a check with CHRV in the memo line to: 17700 S. Figueroa Street, Gardena, CA 90248.

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION EVENT

On Saturday, April 12, 2014, HFH GLA hosted the 24th Annual Volunteer Appreciation Event! We would not be able to do the work we do without the support of our regular volunteers. This year we decided to honor them with a Hollywood style awards ceremony at The Art Theatre in Long Beach. Congratulations to this year's honorees who gave more than 100 hours within the last calendar year and thank you to all of our volunteers who donate their time throughout the year!

SINGLES BUILD DAY!

On Saturday, April 19th, HFH GLA hosted its inaugural Singles Build Day at our Magnolia site in Lynwood. This event brought together nearly 30 men and women to build and potentially meet their perfect match. These socially conscious singles raised more than $3,000 to help eliminate substandard housing in greater Los Angeles! This fun day included a photo booth, music, lots of mingling and a delicious lunch donated by Buca Di Beppo.  Only time will tell if our builders found their Mr. or Ms. Right on our Habitat site.

ReSTORE DONATION DRIVES
HFH GLA's ReStore Donation Drives are a great way to earn funds for your church or organization while supporting HFH GLA's work. The program is simple. HFH GLA will deliver an empty truck trailer for you to fill and be there to help load and pack it on the date of your event. For a comprehensive list of items we do and do not accept, click HERE. For every full 48' trailer your organization will receive $1,500 to use toward your youth group, general operating costs, or a specific outreach initiative. To learn more click HERE.

Our ReStores are open 5 days/week (Tuesday - Saturday, 9am-6pm) at 2 Locations:

17700 S. Figueroa St.

Gardena, CA 90248

11029 Alondra Blvd.

Norwalk, CA 90650

O.A.R BUILD DAY

The band O.A.R. has generously named Habitat for Humanity as it's non-profit partner for their Summer Tour and will donate $1.00 for each ticket sold. To celebrate this partnership, HFH GLA is proud to be hosting a special build day with the band and 40 of their fans! The first 40 fans who make a suggested donation of $50 or more to HFH GLA and list "O.A.R." under donation comment will have the opportunity to participate in this special build. Donate HERE. The build will take place on Saturday May 3rd at an undisclosed location in Los Angeles. In addition to building alongside their fans, O.A.R. will perform a special acoustic set during the lunch break. Please contact Steve Riskin, Director of Corporate Relations at sriskin@habitatla.org for more information.

HABITAT GLOBAL VILLAGE MALAWI
Article by HFH GLA Volunteer and Actress Ashley Noel:

My head has been spinning ever since returning from my first Global Village trip with Habitat for Humanity. I have been a volunteer with Habitat Los Angeles for the past few years. They are by far one of my favorite organizations to work with (and I've worked with my fair share of charities). Habitat is the living expression of the proverb "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; show him how to catch fish, and you feed him for a lifetime". This truly is the way to change the world. And by giving people the basic need of shelter, we are able to lay the foundation for a better life, education, and so much more.

After my last Hollywood for Habitat Build, I decided to embark on my first international Habitat build. I wanted to travel to Africa, so I chose Malawi. Or Malawi chose me.

TRACY HUTSON'S MOMTOURAGE

A few of our partner homeowner moms were treated to room makeovers in their Habitat homes by Tracy Hutson and her momtourage. Tracy Hutson is one of our supporters best known for her role on the Emmy(tm) award-winning series "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition". Momtourage is an original video series on The Design Network focused on lifting up special moms who have done so much for their families and communities. Check out episodes below:

LIFE INSURANCE: A COST EFFECTIVE WAY TO MAKE A GIFT

One of the most overlooked assets to consider when making a gift to HFH GLA is life insurance. Many individuals hold policies that have outlived their need. They have been paid up for years, and the cash value continues to increase. As circumstances change the benefit may have become unnecessary to one's former needs. An insurance policy of this nature can make an excellent gift to an organization such as HFH GLA and provide significant benefits to you, the donor. To see how this gift works, click HERE.

The Benefits

Making an outright gift of an existing life insurance policy entitles the donor to an immediate income tax deduction.  Transferring ownership of a life insurance policy to HFH GLA may also save estate taxes. When an existing life insurance policy is transferred to a charitable organization the cash value of the policy is not considered taxable income. However, any outstanding loans made against the policy may be treated as taxable income. Each situation should be reviewed carefully prior to transferring ownership to HFH GLA.

Transferring Ownership is Easy

The owner of an existing life insurance policy simply contacts the issuing insurance company and secures the proper form to assign the change of ownership. The donor must irrevocably transfer ownership to the charity and name the charity as the designated beneficiary of the policy.

Consider Life Insurance

Life insurance can be a most viable asset to consider when planning an outright or a deferred gift that returns income to you. Talk with your advisors and our gift planning representative to help maximize the best gift planning opportunities available to you.
