Greetings!
As you will read below, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA) has been in the midst of its own March Madness! From high profile build days, to Global Village trips and community meetings, we have been hard at work carrying out our mission. Please take a moment to learn a bit about what we've been up to and be sure to join us in April. We have another great month in store!

HFH GLA HELPS LOWE'S LAUNCH "HAMMERS FOR HABITAT"
|
On Friday, March 21 more than 100 volunteers came together to raise the walls of a new Habitat home in the parking lot of the Lowe's of Central Long Beach. Volunteers included Lowe's Heroes employees from 14 stores in the local market, individuals from the Episcopal Deanery 8 of the Diocese of Los Angeles and a few of our high profile supporters.
We were thrilled to have Jamie Durie host of HGTV's "The Outdoor Room"; Darren Moore of NBC's "American Dream Builders"; Greg Nixon, Team U.S.A. sprinter; Hon. Bonnie Lowenthal, California's 70th State Assembly district; and Kory Minor, retired NFL player and motivational speaker, stop by to celebrate Lowe's longstanding partnership with Habitat for Humanity and kick off "Hammers for Habitat". This new nationwide initiative aims to mobilize 100,000 new volunteers this year in support of Habitat's goal of serving one million people annually by 2018.
One of the special aspects of the day was having partner homeowners who have directly benefited from the Lowe's partnership work alongside volunteers. Ms. LaTonya Thompson is the newest partner homeowner to join this group and she put in her first hours of sweat equity framing the walls of the home she will soon call her own.
Thank you to Lowe's for selecting us as one of 10 affiliates to host this build, which recognized the last 10 years of support as well as kicking off the next five! Click HERE to view a selection of great photos from the day and HERE to read a couple of posts by bloggers who attended the build!

GLOBAL VILLAGE TRIP: SOUTH AFRICA

Earlier this month, 62 people from Faithful Central Bible Church (FCBC) traveled to South Africa with Bishop Ulmer and First Lady Togetta Ulmer of FCBC, led by Fred Brewer, HFHI Director of Corporate Development, Isabel Lee, HFH GLA Corporate Projects Manager and Chris Untiet, HFH GLA Faith Relations Manager, to build seven homes in partnership with Habitat for Humanity South Africa. Bishop Ulmer has been traveling to South Africa for more than 20 years and was thrilled to have so many representatives from his congregation join him for this meaningful trip. The seven homes are part of a mixed income development in an area called Pelican Park, near Cape Town, South Africa. Many of the families who will eventually live in these homes have been on government housing waiting lists for more than 20 years. Faithful Central Bible Church is hoping to go back next year to help build more homes in this same development. HFH GLA's partnership with Faithful Central Bible Church began in 2007. Since then, they have helped repair and build nearly 20 homes across greater Los Angeles as well as raised $270K in support of Habitat's mission. MEET PARTNER HOMEOWNER LATONYA THOMPSON

LaTonya has resided in Los Angeles County for 35 years and has recently been selected as the future homeowner of HFH GLA's 500th home. She is a single mother to Onekieo and LaMeisha and has worked for a major retailer for 13 years. Onekieo is a talented athlete who is involved in sports year-round. LaMeisha is a natural leader in school who takes every opportunity to hone her leadership skills. The entire family is looking forward to moving to Long Beach as they often take leisurely Sunday drives through the city to clear their minds. LaTonya is enjoying being introduced to new construction skills and friends as she completes her sweat equity hours. "This home will be a place where my kids and I can feel safe regardless of what goes on in life."
We will be accepting applications during the month of April for three homes in the City of Long Beach. For more information visit www.habitatla.org, email home@habitatla.org, or call 310.323.4663 x140.

BUILDABLE HOURS

We are thrilled to be hosting Buildable Hours again this summer. In June and July Buildable Hours will bring together law firms throughout Los Angeles County to build Habitat homes for hardworking, low-income partner homeowners in Lynwood, California. Participating firms will spend one or more days building with us. The financial commitment is less than many traditional summer associate activities and allows firms to give back to the Los Angeles community. This unique experience helps staff to get to know their summer associates in a different setting, and gives the firm the opportunity to tangibly demonstrate their commitment to public service. For more information please contact Helen Dosta, Development Manager, at hdosta@habitatla.org.

IN THE COMMUNITY

Our Community Engagement team has held very successful community meetings in both Wilmington and Lynwood this past month. At the meeting held at the Wilmington Senior Center concerns were addressed and attendees left interested in homeownership and volunteer opportunities that will result from a future HFH GLA development. Two meetings were also held at the Household of God Bibleway Church in Lynwood. The focus of both meetings was our plans to work with HFH GLA partner families and Lynwood stakeholders on improving the community. A special thanks to Lynwood Councilmember Sal Alatorre, Lynwood Unified School Board Vice President Alfonso Morales and the L.A. Sheriff's Department for attending.

2013 NEIGHBORHOOD BUILDERS

On Wednesday, March 26, several Board members and staff attended Bank of America's annual Neighborhood Builders celebration. We are happy to announce that HFH GLA was honored as a 2013 Neighborhood Builder and will receive $200,000 in unrestricted funding as well as the opportunity for Erin Rank, HFH GLA President/CEO, and Jennifer Wise, HFH GLA VP of Resource Development, to participate in a strategic leadership development program. HFH GLA Board Chair Gerry Bross accepted the award on behalf of HFH GLA and spoke for a few minutes about this exceptional honor. Since 2004, Bank of America, through its signature philanthropic program, the Neighborhood Builders Program, has helped strengthen communities with more than $160 million in support. More than $6.8 million of that total has been invested right here in Los Angeles. Thank you Bank of America for helping us to build hope, lives and communities!

GENERAL HOSPITAL FAN BUILD DAY

For more photos click HERE.
The 5th Anniversary of our General Hospital Fan Build Day was a huge success! Fans traveled from near and far (Northern, Central and Southern California, Colorado, Minnesota, Maine, Massachusetts, Washington, Illinois, Maryland and even Canada) to build alongside their favorite General Hospital stars. This year was the best year ever for cast turnout and we thank our #1 cast member, Lisa LoCicero, for recruiting more of her co-stars year after year. Attendees also heard from partner homeowners Laura Marquez and Claudia Otis, who also blogged about the build day HERE. The General Hospital Fan Build Day originated in 2009 with Brandon Barash and Lisa LoCicero who created the event as a way to reward loyal fans of the show while becoming more involved with Habitat for Humanity.
