NEWSLETTER
FEBRUARY 2014

Greetings!

With only 28 days, February went by quickly! We at Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA) loved hosting special build days with organizations like the Los Angeles Lakers as well as the time we were able to spend preparing for exciting upcoming events! Please spend a few minutes reading about our February highlights and we hope to see you soon volunteering, or shopping in our ReStores!

ACT! SPEAK! BUILD! WEEK

Act! Speak! Build! Week is all about students becoming advocates for decent, affordable and sustainable housing. This year, Act! Speak! Build! Week (ASBW) will take place April 6-12. Currently, 1.6 billion people live in poverty housing and HFH GLA is encouraging local youth to do something about this frightening statistic!

HFH GLA's key activity, the "Opening Doors to Change Design Contest", asks participants to take a common door and decorate it to raise awareness for affordable housing. Get creative, advocate and slam the door on poverty housing!

For more information, to register and additional ASBW activities click HERE.

HABITAT ON THE HILL

Vice President of Advocacy and Community Partnerships Veronica Garcia and Faith Relations Manager Chris Untiet represented HFH GLA at Habitat on the Hill, Habitat for Humanity International's 8th annual legislative conference in Washington D.C. They were joined by Teresa Hillery, a volunteer. More than 250 advocates, representing affiliates from throughout the United States, participated in this three day conference, which took place February 11th through 13th and focused on the importance of the AmeriCorps program, Self-help Homeownership Opportunity Program (SHOP) funding and housing on an international level. Highlights of the conference included a fireside chat between Jonathan Reckford, CEO at Habitat for Humanity International, and Shaun Donavan, United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. "Why we build is as important as what we build," said Jonathan Reckford. "A collective presence in front of legislators, advocating for affordable housing solutions and sound policies, means that the more than 1.6 billion people worldwide who lack adequate shelter have hope for a decent place to live." Other conference speakers included Charlie Cook, Editor and Publisher of The Cook Political Report and Columnist for the National Journal, as well as Renee Glover, Former President and CEO of Atlanta Housing Authority. HFH GLA's video from Celebration of Service 2013 was also screened to highlight the wonderful work serving veterans that is coming out of the partnership between Habitat and The Home Depot Foundation. It is always special to be in our nation's capital advocating for housing issues, especially since homeownership is such a big piece of the American Dream. LOS ANGELES LAKERS BUILD DAY

The Los Angeles Lakers sign up annually for a build day with HFH GLA and we look forward to having them every year. This year's build was particularly special because seven fans had the opportunity to build with staff members and point guard, Kendall Marshall. The group installed and sealed windows, blue board, siding and helped move equipment. Kendall even got some one-on-one instruction on how to work the power saw! Check out more photos HERE and click HERE to learn more about Hollywood for Habitat for Humanity.

LENT BUILD
Join us for our annual Lent Build 2014: 40 Days of Building on Faith! March 5th through April 19th we will help build and repair homes for those in need across greater Los Angeles. Weekday group build days are available for $500 and Saturdays for $2,500. Space is limited so contact Chris Untiet today to register!
