Greetings!
November is a special time of year to give thanks for our many blessings in life. In this month's Habitat Happenings, we would like to share a few stories of what we're especially thankful for like the impact we were able to make on a neighborhood in Lynwood during our recent Hollywood for Habitat for Humanity Build-A-Thon (HFHFH BAT). During this season of giving thanks, we also ask that you please consider giving back through our Adopt-a-Family Holiday Program. Most importantly, we want to thank you for your support because without you, none of this would be possible. Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA)!

ADOPT-A-FAMILY HOLIDAY PROGRAM
|
Join HFH GLA in helping 40 hardworking, low-income families experience the magic of the holidays! Through the Adopt-a-Family Holiday Program, HFH GLA will assemble and present each family with a gift basket valued at $250. You can sponsor an entire family or fundraise with others to adopt multiple families! In-kind donations of gift cards are also welcome. Donations must be received by December 2, 2013. Click HERE to donate!

HOLLYWOOD FOR HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BUILD-A-THON
| |
This year's HFHFH BAT transformed an entire neighborhood in just four days! It took a village, but together with veterans and volunteers from various sectors we were able to kickoff construction on seven new homes and make repairs to seven existing homes, two churches and one market. There were many HFHFH BAT highlights, but one of the most impactful was building alongside veterans and active military members in honor of Veterans Day. Some recognizable volunteers included: Dotsie Bausch (Olympian), Robert 'Kool' Bell and George Brown (Kool & the Gang), Emily Bergl (Desperate Housewives), Colin Ford (Under the Dome), Lindsey Harding (LA Sparks), Tracy Hutson (Extreme Makeover: Home Edition), Pauley Perrette (NCIS), Monica Potter (Parenthood), Glynn Turman (House of Lies), Lisa LoCicero and Dominic Zamprogna (General Hospital), Randall Wallace (Producer/Writer/Director "We Were Soldiers") and many more!
JCPenney joined us as this year's top sponsor. In addition to lending hands-on construction support, they brought out world-renowned designer and architect Michael Graves to speak during one of our lunch programs. Graves, who recently launched Michael Graves Design at JCPenney and is a long-standing advocate for the disabled, spoke about designing one of our seven new homes to be completely handicap accessible for a hardworking, low-income family in need.
Thank you also to the City of Lynwood, The Gary Magness Foundation, Disney and Vons, as well as all of our generous sponsors and volunteers for being a part of this very special build event that revitalized an entire neighborhood! Click HERE to view more photos.

DELTA BUILDS 2013 HOME DEDICATION
|
We recently dedicated the most charming home for Tara Young and her two children, Ahjanae and Sirr (pictured left). This past September, Delta Air Lines began renovations on Tara Young's Spanish style home in North Long Beach. Employees from the Los Angeles area as well as other cities across the country worked tirelessly to make sure the home was complete in time for the holidays! Tara Young's home was the third home in Long Beach to be sponsored by Delta Air Lines. Click HERE for all of the photos!

Pat Genovese, a teacher at Notre Dame Academy Elementary, has been incorporating HFH GLA's mission into her curriculum for years. We love Pat's creativity and commitment to educating her students on the importance of affordable housing. This year, for World Habitat Day, Pat created an adorable video starring her students and once again we are so impressed. Thanks Pat!

A PARTY WITH A PURPOSE
| |
On a Saturday this past September producer ('Precious') and businesswoman, Sarah Siegel-Magness, celebrated a milestone birthday by having a build with us.
Sarah, her husband, entrepreneur Gary Magness, and their teenage daughter, Camryn, along with their group of close friends that included actors, designers and producers, put in a hard day of manual labor rehabbing one of our homes in Compton. The group painted the entire home, dug ditches, stained and sealed wood fences, painted a wall and removed brush and debris. They also heard a moving testimonial from one of our partner homeowners and learned more about HFH GLA from our board chair, Gerry Bross. All of the hard work, however, did not stop the team from making time to enjoy birthday cake and sing happy birthday to Sarah.
Sarah and Gary appreciate the impact homeownership can have on a family and this is why they not only sponsored a birthday build, but also became a major sponsor of our HFHFH BAT by sponsoring the rehabilitation of an additional HFH GLA home. We were thrilled to see familiar faces from the Magness team return to build more homes during our HFHFH BAT.
We are thankful for the Magness family's commitment to building hope, lives and communities!

FAITHFUL CENTRAL BIBLE CHURCH TO BUILD HOMES IN INGLEWOOD AND SOUTH AFRICA
| |
We are excited to continue our partnership with Faithful Central Bible Church of Inglewood under the leadership of Bishop Kenneth C. Ulmer. Over the next five months, Faithful Central will rally volunteers together to repair homes for low-income Inglewood homeowners through our Home Repair program. In March, Bishop Ulmer will also be leading a team from the church to build homes in Cape Town with Habitat for Humanity South Africa. We are truly blessed to serve alongside Faithful Central both locally and globally.

BEACH CITIES FRIENDS TRIVIA NIGHT
| |
This fall our Beach Cities Friends (BCF) committee hosted a sold out Trivia Night at American Martyrs Church in Manhattan Beach to raise funds and awareness for HFH GLA. More than 200 participants had fun flexing their brain muscles during rounds of play covering topics such as pop-culture, geography and sports. Over $17,000 was raised at this event and we want to thank BCF committee members: Eve Currin, Mary Hocking, Denise X. Lavell, Leslie Whinfrey, Sunni Won and especially committee chair, Cindy Hoag. Save the date for the next Trivia Night on March 1, 2014. More information on BCF can be found HERE and more photos from the night can be viewed HERE.

IT'S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR, PLAN NOW TO SAVE TAXES!
| |
The time of year has come when most of our donors make their annual gifts. Your gifts make a difference in the lives of the families we serve, but we also want to make sure that your donations have the most significant impact on your life as well! Please consider the following options:
- You may have significant stock gains that you have held for more than a year and can receive a charitable income tax deduction for the stock's current value while avoiding capital gains tax on the appreciated value. The same is true for real estate holdings.
- Consider making a gift that pays income to you, like our Charitable Gift Annuity. It offers higher payout rates than most investments.
- If you are over 70 1/2 years of age you can make a direct transfer from an IRA to HFH GLA through 12/3 of this year.
- Bequests can be made through your will or trust and don't require that you give away anything during your lifetime. You might also consider making a bequest from an insurance policy or a retirement fund.
Explore your options with your tax advisor on our website HERE. For more information, contact Jennifer M. Wise, VP of Resource Development, HFH GLA, at 424-246-3627 or jwise@habitatla.org.
