NEW LONG BEACH HOMEOWNERS HONORED IN HOME DEDICATION CEREMONY
|
On Saturday, August 24th, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA) officially welcomed nine new partner homeowners to the City of Long Beach! Long Beach City Councilmembers Steven Neal and Al Austin, Ray Brewer from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and HFH GLA board members were all on hand to celebrate the nine partner homeowners who put in a lot of hard work to make their dreams of homeownership a reality. Alongside our community partners, Wells Fargo, Oxy Long Beach, Inc. and Edison International also supported the building of these nine homes with generous financial contributions.
The nine homes that HFH GLA dedicated were built as part of the Neighborhood Stabilization Porgram (NSP). Through NSP, HFH GLA has been able to help reinvigorate and revitalize some of Long Beach's most economically disadvantaged neighborhoods and those hit by the recent economic crisis.
Congratulations to the Ceja, Cordova, Figueroa, Leiva, Mark, Ochoa, Otis, Sanchez and Yi families on this milestone that will continue to impact lives for generations to come. For more information on homeownership opportunities click HERE. Click HERE to view photos from the day.

A GREAT ALTERNATIVE FOR YOUR INVESTMENTS
|
Do you try to keep up with the market and the rise and fall of interest rates? This can be a difficult task given that the market changes daily, even hourly!
At HFH GLA we have a type of gift called a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) that can help you secure a stable and safe income stream for life while supporting our mission.
A CGA gives capital back to you during your lifetime. It's a stable charitable giving program that provides a guaranteed fixed income. Because a portion of your gift is returned to you, some of your income is tax free. Plus our rates of return are relatively high when compared with a commercial annuity. For example, a single person 70 years of age can receive a fixed income with a rate of return set at 5.1 %. Similarly, a couple aged 75 & 73 can receive an income rate of 4.9 %. Plus, a portion of the annual income is tax free!
For more detailed information about how you can personally benefit from creating a CGA for yourself, click HERE. If you would like to talk to one of our staff members about this or other opportunities please contact Jennifer Wise, Vice President of Resource Development via email at jwise@habitatla.org or by telephone at (424) 246-3627.

Mosaic Small Group Featured on NBC
| |
A small group of supporters from Mosaic Church in Hollywood has made a commitment to sponsor one of HFH GLA's future homes in Culver City and recently had their story featured on NBC news. The small group was compelled to do something that would bring Angelenos from all walks of life together around a common cause after reading about the Philippi in Ancient Greece who were recognized for their generosity. To date, the group is off to a great start, having already raised nearly $50,000 using their fundraising website Philippians House and generous personal donations. Be sure to check out the news story HERE.

MEET VOLUNTEER DAVID GARDNER
| |
| David Gardner |
David started volunteering with HFH GLA in 2005. He came to a build day with his employer at the time, TRW, and then weeks later with Rolling Hills United Methodist Church. Eight years later, David is still volunteering with us on a weekly basis, helping to keep our construction warehouse in order and occasionally working on construction sites. He plays an important role in keeping our construction materials organized and accounted for.

CORPORATE BUILD DAY PROGRAM
| |
| Volunteers from Zurich North America |
HFH GLA's Corporate Build Day program has grown dramatically over the past few years. The Corporate Build Day program gives employees the opportunity to get out of the office and onto a construction site for a day of team building while giving back to the local community. It brings together the combination of a company's financial resources and their volunteer efforts to build, renovate and rehabilitate homes making a difference for hardworking, low-income families in need of decent, sustainable and affordable housing. This unique experience allows the company's staff to get to know their colleagues in a different setting, observe the employees' ability to work together and to tangibly demonstrate their commitment to public service.
We are grateful to our annual donors such as The Home Depot Foundation, Lowe's, The Capital Group Companies, OXY Long Beach, Inc., The Walt Disney Company, Wells Fargo, Union Bank, Bank of America, Vons, Delta Air Lines, Holland & Knight and many more who continuously support our mission.
Additionally, we also would like to thank new donors such as Media Temple, Axminster Medical Group and Zurich North America.

The Speakers Bureau was formed to respond to requests for more information about Habitat for Humanity's mission and goals and to build awareness about the need for affordable housing. The Speakers Bureau is comprised of a broad group of individuals dedicated to delivering informative presentations to businesses and organizations throughout the Greater Los Angeles area.
Recently the Speakers Bureau had an opportunity to present to the 108th and Hoover Neighborhood Association in Los Angeles. Janice Chang represented HFH GLA at the meeting and provided residents of the community with information about our organization and our programs. Read more about Janice and other members of our Speakers Bureau HERE.
Since its inception this spring, the Speakers Bureau has already made presentations to 15 different groups and nearly 200 people.
