Greetings!
Greetings! Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA) kicked off summer with one of our most exciting build events of the year - Power Women Power Tools! We are looking forward to continuing the fun all summer long as we work hard to build and renovate homes and engage partners as well as the community in our work. We hope to see you soon on a build site or in one of our ReStores. Until then, keep reading for the latest news!

|
More than 200 celebrities, entertainment industry professionals, corporate executives and event volunteers came out for our Power Women Power Tools build event on June 15th at Sony Pictures Studios. Donning the event's signature pink hardhats, the power women volunteers framed 120 walls for future Habitat for Humanity homes alongside partner homeowners. Some of this year's more recognizable volunteers included Tia Carrere, Kristina Guerrero, Shanola Hampton, Mya Harrison, Kate Linder, Missy Peregrym, Tom Shadyac and Alicia Witt.
The annual build event began in 2005 and has engaged thousands of women from various sectors who have helped to build affordable homes and, most importantly, propel our mission forward.
Volunteers heard from Culver City Vice Mayor Meghan Sahli-Wells and the Hon. Jan Perry, Los Angeles City Councilmember for the 9th district. In addition, they heard from two HFH GLA partner homeowners; Gloria Alfaro got volunteers into the building spirit during the morning program while Zalikah Templeton moved the crowd to tears at lunch.
Thank you to Lowe's, Union Bank, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Variety for sponsoring this year's event and to our volunteers for making the 9th Annual Power Women Power Tools one that we will always remember! Click HERE to see and share photos!

As a single mother to three boys, Gloria Alfaro is thrilled to be purchasing a home in Lynwood, CA. She knows that owning a home will provide so many benefits including privacy and safety.
Gloria has worked as a word processing technician for 13 years. She also volunteers as a youth teacher at her church. Her oldest son, Carlos, joined the Marines eight months ago. Carlos is currently working in the Gardena ReStore to help his mom complete her sweat equity hours before he leaves on assignment with the Marines. Gloria also has two younger sons. Daniel is a senior in high school who loves math and English and is looking forward to a career as a veterinarian. Her youngest, Miguel, is five. He loves to play soccer and is on the art committee at his school. Click through to learn more about HFH GLA homeownership opportunities!

RETIREMENT FUNDS: WISE ESTATE PLANNING
| |
Your retirement funds may be one of the best assets to consider donating when making a charitable bequest. Did you know that assets left in retirement funds are subject to income tax and potentially estate taxes at the time of your passing?
The only way to avoid either tax is by making a bequest to a charitable organization such as HFH GLA. Charities are tax exempt and therefore are not subject to paying either tax when assets of this type are donated to the charity and subsequently redeemed by them.
You can also provide for an heir by making a bequest from your estate directly to a charitable trust using assets from your retirement fund. These assets can provide your heir with an income for life. Upon the death of the income beneficiary of the trust, the assets are then transferred to the charity. An income tax is only imposed on the annual income received by the beneficiary not the lump sum contained in the trust.
