Greetings!
With Memorial Day having come and gone, summer is officially upon us! We hope that you enjoyed some time off to spend with friends and family, as well as remember the service men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. We are looking forward to some exciting builds in June and hope that you can join us!
We would also like to acknowledge the communities in Texas and Oklahoma that were impacted by the spring tornadoes. One of them struck a community in the Granbury area, where an estimated 120 homes were damaged or destroyed including 61 Habitat for Humanity homes. In light of this news, HFHI is launching a $5 million fundraising initiative to help rebuild homes and communities affected by the tornadoes. Please help us rebuild homes and hope by clicking HERE to make a donation.

NATIONAL WOMEN BUILD WEEK 2013
|
Earlier this month more than 10,000 women volunteered to build with Habitat for Humanity all over the country as part of National Women Build Week (NWBW). Now in its sixth year, NWBW challenges women to spend a day helping to build affordable housing in their local communities.
This year the National Women Build spokeswoman was actress Holly Robinson Peete and we were thrilled to have her join us in renovating Roman Tesfaye's home in Long Beach, CA. She, along with volunteers from local Lowe's stores, Roman and her daughter, Helen, started demo on the home's interior, built a new exterior fence and began painting the outside of the home.
Roman emigrated from Ethiopia and has been living in Los Angeles for the last 11 years. She works as a nursing assistant while Helen is following in her mother's footsteps and studying to be a nurse at California State University, Los Angeles.
We had a great time getting to know each other, celebrating service and empowering others to get involved through social media. Our twitter feed was almost as loud as our power tools and hammers! Check out pictures and video from the day!

INTERFAITH OUTREACH DINNER
| |
![](http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs129/1102255660751/img/597.jpg?a=1113594235689)
It is exciting to see our Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles interfaith community evolving in partnership with Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) and alongside Habitat affiliates in New York, Atlanta, Grand Rapids, Denver and Seattle.
On May 1st, the night before the National Day of Prayer, seven different faith traditions representing 18 different congregations gathered at the Baha'i Center in Los Angeles for dinner and to discuss how we can all work together to build and renovate homes here in Los Angeles and around the world. The energy in the room that night was palpable and we are looking forward to seeing the different ways Los Angeles' diverse faith community will rally around our mission in the months ahead.

LCDQ LEGENDS EVENT
| |
We were honored to again be the beneficiary of LEGENDS, a three day celebration of design staged by the La Cienega Design Quarter (LCDQ). This year's theme was Time Capsule: The Past, Present and Future of Design. Many of the design shops and galleries in the LCDQ were transformed by the nation's most prominent designers to reflect the theme. Other events included receptions, keynote panel discussions, cocktail parties, exhibitions, book signings and more. Proceeds from the LEGENDS VIP passes netted more than $20,000 and will help us to serve more hardworking, low-income families in greater Los Angeles. In addition to benefiting from the VIP ticket sales of LCDQ, we also benefited from an online sale that was hosted by Beverly Hills showroom, One Kings Lane and raised more than $7,000.

CELEBRATING DISNEY VoluntEARS
| |
As part of this year's 30th Anniversary of the Disney VoluntEARS program, The Walt Disney Company funded HFH GLA with a $20,000 grant to support our mission. The company was on-site with HFH GLA May 15-18, engaging a total of 60 Disney VoluntEARS to help repair a local veteran's home in greater Los Angeles.
The Disney VoluntEARS focused on exterior home repairs for Mr. Roger Dowell and his wife, Mary Harris, who have resided in their home for 28 years. Originally from Memphis, TN, Roger left home at the age of 19 and spent four years with the US Marine Corps. After the service, he had a long career as a certified security officer. Mary worked as an LAUSD librarian for many years before retiring as a result of health issues.
The recent build with the Disney VoluntEARS is a great example of HFH GLA's Habitat for Heroes program in action! The program provides veterans and active military members with a wide variety of opportunities that benefit their physical, emotional and financial health. This initiative, which was launched in 2011, has provided veterans and military members with the full scope of HFH GLA services, including opportunities for homeownership and home repairs, financial literacy and homeownership training, basic construction training, leadership, advocacy and volunteerism, as well as opportunities to engage their children in a variety of HFH GLA youth programs.

HOME REPAIR PROGRAM
|
Previously known as A Brush with Kindness and Critical Home Repairs, our two former home repair services have been combined to fall under a singular program known as HFH GLA's Home Repair Program (HRP). Through HRP, low-income homeowners can receive help with both interior and exterior home repair needs. HFH GLA has targeted a completion of 32 HRP projects by June 30th and we are planning for 21 of these projects to assist veteran homeowners who have selflessly served our country.
Mr. Sylvester Brooks is one veteran homeowner who HFH GLA recently partnered with to provide kitchen and bathroom plumbing repairs, as well as rebuilding a wooden picket fence. Sylvester has lived in his Compton, California home for more than 57 years. He is retired after working as a Manufacturing Engineering Planner for Rockwell International for 38 years. Before beginning his career, Sylvester served in the United States Air Force. He spent the majority of his time in active enlistment and three years as an active reserve in the medic's dental department. By his third honorable discharge, Sylvester had earned the rank of Staff Sergeant and held a WWII Victory Medal amongst his honors. As a disabled Veteran, Sylvester has had difficulty keeping up his home both financially and physically.
To find out more about the HRP, eligibility requirements or to download an application, visit our website at www.habitatla.org or call 310-323-4663. Applications are processed on a first come, first serve basis. Program funds vary per applicant and homeowner selections are limited.

On the 15th the Wells Fargo El Segundo branch worked on rehabilitating a property in Long Beach and on the 17th volunteers from various divisions and branches completed work on a rehab property in Compton. Thank you to all of our Wells Fargo volunteers for helping us to build hope, lives and communities!
